This article explains how to propose milestones for fixed-price jobs on Upwork. You can include milestones in your proposals, suggest them during the interview phase, or request changes once a contract is active. Using milestones can help you set clearer expectations, manage deliverables, and get paid in smaller steps as the work moves forward. - AI helped create this summary

You can use milestones to break a fixed-price job into smaller, more manageable parts. They make it easier to stay aligned with your client and get paid as the work progresses — instead of waiting until the very end for one full payment.

Propose a milestone for a new job

You can include milestones in your proposals or suggest them during the interview phase — before the contract starts. It’s a great way to set specific terms and clearer expectations than a single, flat bid.

The client can accept your milestones or set up their own when they send an offer.

Propose a milestone for an active job

Once a contract’s in place, only the client can create or edit milestones.

If you want to add new milestones, change upcoming ones, or propose a new contract, you’ll need to send a request to your client for the changes.

Note that clients can only fund one milestone at a time. A milestone is not eligible for possible Fixed-Price Protection until the client has fully funded it.
