You can pause a contract to prevent a freelancer from logging hours by selecting “Pause contract” from the (...) menu under Manage work > Your contracts. To resume, choose “Restart” from the same menu. Always notify the freelancer to maintain transparency and trust.

You might need to pause a contract to stop a freelancer from logging more hours until you are ready to restart the work.

To pause the contract

  1. Go to Manage work > Your contracts and find the contract
  2. Select the (...) options menu and choose Pause contract

To restart the contract

  1. Go to Manage work > Your contracts and find the contract
  2. Select the (...) options menu and choose Restart

Important:

Upwork Payroll contracts will always show as paused because they use a separate billing system.

We recommend that you message your freelancer to let them know that you're pausing the contract and when you expect to restart, if you know. This lets the freelancer know what to expect and helps build good communication and trust in your relationship with them.
