Work for an Agency

We've created a guide to agencies to help you decide if an agency is right for you.

Every agency is a unique business and there are many things that Upwork allows both you and your agency to do. Talk to your agency manager about how they want these processes to work.


Proposals and Offers

All agency members can submit proposals and each proposal draws from the agency’s collective balance of Connects. Only business managers can accept an offer, which means you’ll need them to take action before you can work for a client.

Contracts

Business managers can edit contract terms. Both you and your business manager can submit milestones on fixed-price contracts, but only you can log time on your hourly contracts. All contracts are paid into the agency’s collective financial account balance.

Get Paid

When you work for an agency, all contract earnings are paid to the agency's financial account on Upwork. Please talk to your agency about how they will pay you.

Exclusive Agency Relationships

Exclusive agency members work on Upwork only as part of an agency. This is the default and most common type of agency relationship. Your profile and proposals will be branded with your agency to make the agency’s part in the work relationship clear to the clients. All contracts will be paid to the agency.

Non-Exclusive Agency Relationships

Non-exclusive agency members can work on Upwork independently and as part of an agency. Agency contracts will be paid to the agency. Independent contracts are paid to you.

By default, you’ll appear in the marketplace as an independent freelancer not associated with an agency. If you wish to be treated as an agency member in search results, on your profile, and when clients reach out to you, you’ll need to set the agency as your default team in your Settings > My Teams.

Either way, you’ll have the choice every time you submit a proposal to specify if you’d be working on that project independently or as an agency member.

Leave an Agency

You can leave an agency at any time. If you choose to do so, you will keep your Upwork profile and related work history from your time in the agency.

To leave your agency:

  1. Click the account drop-down menu at the top right and choose Settings. Then click My Teams.
  2. Select Leave Team from the Actions drop-down list.
