Payment Methods Options

Upwork allows you to choose the best payment method for you. We suggest that you set up a second payment method as a backup, just in case your first one isn’t available for some reason. You can add as many as you want and make changes as needed. Upwork supports these payment methods and you should research them to find out what is best for you:

Most freelancers choose the following payment methods:

  • United States: ACH (it’s usually free!)
  • Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Colombia, Eurozone/SEPA, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Pakistan, and Philippines: Local Funds Transfer
  • Other Countries: Usually PayPal (if it’s available), U.S. Dollar Wire Transfers (for large transfers to cooperative banks), or Payoneer (if you don’t have a bank account and it’s available).

ACH Direct Deposit

ACH stands for Automated Clearing House, a network for electronic financial transactions that allows for transfers to any U.S. bank account. Many banks refer to incoming ACH transfers as direct deposits.

  • Usually FREE for all who qualify. You must have a U.S. bank account. Upwork does not charge fees for ACH transfers; check with your bank to confirm whether any incoming fees apply.
  • ACH funds will arrive in your bank account in two to five business days. Processing and clearing times vary widely from bank to bank. Bank holidays can also delay your funds.
  • You must be listed as an account holder or authorized signer on the bank account. If your name on the bank account doesn't match your name on your profile, click here to learn how you can fix it.
  • It’s essential that you enter your bank information correctly. Any errors could result in a failed transfer or delay. Contact your bank if you’re not sure you have the correct information or if you received an error when you tried to enter it in our system.

Local Funds Transfer

Local Funds Transfer (LFT) can be the fastest and least expensive payment method for many. Set up is typically simple and there are no intermediary bank or third-party vendors to restrict your account, delay payment or add fees.

  • The cost per payment by LFT depends on your country (plus incoming fees at some banks):
    • $0.99 – Philippines (PHP)
    • $1.99 – India (INR), Australia (AUD), Canada (CAD), Great Britain (GBP), SEPA (EUR)
    • $3.99 – Colombia (COP), Kenya (KES), Indonesia (IDR)
    • $4.99 – Bangladesh (BDT), Pakistan (PKR)
  • Local currency may reduce or eliminate incoming bank fees. The currency conversion will be performed by Upwork’s bank before the funds are sent to you.
  • There is a 12:00pm (noon) UTC cutoff time for same-day processing. After that, LFTs will be processed the following business day. Bank holidays in the U.S. or your country can delay your funds. In general, LFT payments will arrive at your bank within:
    • Two to four business days – Philippines, India, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and SEPA/Euros
    • Same day to three business days – Bangladesh, Colombia, Indonesia, Kenya, and Pakistan
Learn more about the necessary bank codes.
  • Our bank partner works directly with most of each country’s major banks to avoid delayed payments or added fees. However, your bank may charge you an incoming remittance fee. Upwork does not earn any part of this fee. Please consult your bank about possible incoming fees on LFTs. Because of our banking relationships in the Philippines, Upwork transfers are not currently charged any incoming remittance fees for the following banks:
    • Bank of Philippine Islands (BPI Direct and BPI Family Savings accounts do not qualify for this waiver)
    • Banco de Oro
    • Standard Chartered Bank
  • Maximum per transaction limits are in place for certain countries and banks. Check with your bank for further details, but we are aware of the following current limits (in U.S. Dollars):
    • Indonesia – $2,000
    • Kenya – $5,000
    • Colombia – $5,000
  • You may be asked to provide a Certificate of Earnings to open a bank account or be permitted to accept incoming transfers. This can be generated at any time in your Reports tab. In some cases, you may also need to print and provide a signed User Agreement.

Wire Transfer

Wire transfers are a well-established way to make bank-to-bank funds transfers across international borders. They are available to all freelancers with a valid bank account outside the U.S. using use the SWIFT system.

  • Upwork charges a $30 fee for each U.S. dollar wire transfer because they are more expensive for Upwork to process than our other payment methods.
  • Wire transfers to non-U.S. Dollar accounts are subject to fluctuating rates of the foreign exchange market. Your bank will determine the exchange rate you will receive.
  • Your bank may charge an exchange fee or currency spread in addition to or instead of the basic incoming international wire fee. If your bank uses an intermediary and/or correspondent bank, it may charge an additional fee. Please ask your bank about the possible fees.
  • Bank holidays in the U.S. or your country can delay your funds.
  • You may be asked to provide a Certificate of Earnings to open a bank account or be permitted to accept incoming transfers. This can be generated at any time in your Reports tab. In some cases, you may also need to print and provide a signed User Agreement.
  • Banks in some countries such as Ukraine and India require a memo along with every incoming wire transfer. When you select a wire transfer payment method, you will see a Remittance information field that allows you to enter a memo which will be sent along with your wire transfer.
    • Banks process remittance information differently, so you should contact your bank to determine the format you need to use for the memo. Depending on your bank, it may or may not be visible on your bank statement.
    • Custom remittance memos can be set on scheduled wire payments. The memo will remain the same for each payment until you edit it in your schedule.
