When your earnings from your clients become available depends on the type of payment:

  • Your earnings for hours and set weekly payments – Based on the weekly billing cycle
  • Your earnings for fixed-price milestone – After the client approves the milestone and the five-day security period has passed
  • Your earnings for bonuses or other manual payments – After your client's payment has been successfully processed and the five-day security period has passed

In order to access your earnings, you'll need to add a payment method and set your tax status. Once that is complete, your available balance will then be disbursed to you automatically according to your chosen payment schedule. You can also withdraw your funds yourself at any time.

Withdraw Your Earnings

Your earnings will be withdrawn automatically according to your chosen payment schedule. However, you may request to withdraw your available earnings immediately. To do so:

  1. Go to the Accounts menu > Settings > Get Paid
  2. Click the Get Paid Now button at the top
  3. Choose the amount to withdraw and click the Get Paid Now button

Upwork gives you the choice when it comes to how you withdraw your funds. We offer the following payment methods direct to your bank account:

Please note that availability of payment methods varies by country and there may be incoming fees at some banks. Consider comparing costs and access options in your country before selecting a method. Click the "Add Payment Method" button to see all your options and pricing.

Set Up a Payment Method

Upwork allows you to choose the best payment method for you. Before setting up a payment method on Upwork, double check your account number(s) and details carefully. Accurate entry of these details is your responsibility and essential for successful withdrawals.

  1. Go to the Accounts menu > Settings > Get Paid
  2. Click Add a Payment Method
  3. Click the Set Up button for your chosen method and enter the info requested
  4. Choose a payment schedule and click Next
  5. For security reasons, your new payment method will become active in three days

Consider setting up a second payment method as a backup, just in case your first one isn't available for some reason. You can add as many as you want and make changes as needed.

Payment Details

  • ACH Direct Deposit, Direct to Local Bank, or Wire Transfer
    • Enter your bank account details
  • Payoneer
    • Complete the Payoneer registration process (either by creating a new account or logging in to add Upwork to an existing one)
    • When you are finished, you will be automatically returned to the Upwork site with your account linked
  • PayPal
    • Confirm your Upwork and PayPal accounts use the same email address (if needed, update in your Upwork Contact Info)
  • M-Pesa
    • Enter the details for your M-Pesa account

Edit Payment Information

  1. Go to the Accounts menu > Settings > Get Paid
  2. Under Payment Methods, find the one you want and click the edit link for it
  3. Edit your information and click Save Changes

Email addresses, bank account numbers, and bank codes can't be edited. You must add a new payment method if these change. Don't forget to remove the old payment method at that time, too.

Remove a Payment Method

To remove a payment method:

  1. Go to the Accounts menu > Settings > Get Paid
  2. Under Payment Methods, find the one you want to remove and click its edit link
  3. Click Remove


Why can't I access my earnings?

Pending payment or no available balance

Your earnings will show as Pending on your Reports > Transaction History while the client's incoming payment is processed and during the security period. You will also see a future date posted in the Date column. That is the date that you can access your earnings. You'll need to wait for your funds to become available to make a withdrawal.

New payment method

For security reasons, after you add a new payment method, you must wait three days to use it.

No tax information on file

All freelancers must enter their tax status. Click here to provide this information.

Suspended financial account

If your account is temporarily limited, your ability to withdraw may be turned off until the issue is resolved.

Upwork Status

Incident Status

Our records show your Upwork account is not active.

This might be due to no account activity (earnings, payments, contracts, etc.) or because we had to suspend it. When we suspend an account we send an email explaining the reason and whether or not you can take steps to reverse the suspension. Please review that email for more details.
