Video and voice calls

This article explains how Upwork's integration with Zoom enables video and voice meetings directly within Upwork Messages, without the need for a Zoom account. How to use Zoom for meetings


Start a Zoom meeting

  1. In your messages, select the video camera icon in the upper right corner
  2. Choose the meeting format. Options include Zoom meeting, recorded Zoom meeting, and dial in to a Zoom meeting. If you choose dial in, you’ll see a pop up window where you’ll be prompted to start a Zoom meeting. Then you’ll be provided the phone number and passcode for the meeting
  3. First-time users will receive a prompt to review and accept Zoom's Terms of Service
  4. A Join Zoom meeting link will be posted into the conversation for you and other participants. Select it to enter the meeting

Join a Zoom meeting

You can join an active or scheduled meeting by choosing the Join Zoom meeting link in your messages. You can join meetings from both web browsers and the Zoom app.

Schedule a Zoom meeting

You can schedule Zoom meetings in advance by choosing the calendar icon in Messages. Learn more about scheduling meetings on Upwork.

Important information about Zoom meetings


  • Recording: Recordings are available for seven days after the meeting, after which they are automatically deleted. Note that recordings cannot be disabled once a meeting has started. Learn more about recorded Zoom meetings
  • No Zoom account needed: Upwork's Zoom integration lets you join meetings directly from a web browser or the Zoom app, even without a Zoom account and collaborate easily right on the Upwork platform
  • Features: The Zoom integration on Upwork is specific to video communication. For text chat, you can use the chat feature within Upwork Messages to supplement their video experience

Can I share my own meeting link without using the tools within Upwork?

You can use your own meeting tools after a contract has started. Sharing a meeting link (or any other form of contact outside Upwork) before a contract starts is circumvention, which is against our Terms of Service.

After a contract starts, use the contract workroom to message and share details.
