Updates to operations in Myanmar

To help us process payments around the globe, we rely on trusted payment partners. Recently, our partners have let us know they will no longer accept payments from anyone based in Myanmar after 11:59 p.m. MMT on January 30, 2024.

As a result, we will be suspending client accounts based in Myanmar. You will still be able to access your account and your account information, but will not be able to pay, start contracts, use Upwork Messages, or post jobs.

Freelancers based in Myanmar can continue working and earning on Upwork; however, you will not be able to use a credit card or other billing method based in Myanmar. You will continue to be able to use Connects, including the 10 free Connects you receive each month, start new contracts with clients, create projects with Project Catalog, and offer consultations, if you are eligible.

If you are a client based in Myanmar

Please take the following steps by 11:59 p.m. MMT on January 30, 2024:

• Reach out to any freelancers you are working with to discuss wrapping up your project and submitting any work.
• Submit any final payments due to the freelancer/agency by 11:59 p.m. MMT on Jan. 30. After Jan. 30, we’ll close your contracts (you'll still be able to access your Upwork account to view transactions).

If you are a freelancer based in Myanmar

• You can continue working and earning on Upwork
• After January 30, 2024, you will not be able to use a credit card or other billing method to buy Connects, subscribe to Freelancer Plus, or use Upwork as a client to hire other talent
• You can continue to use the 10 Connects you receive free each month to submit proposals for new jobs
• You can continue to start new contracts with clients, create projects with Project Catalog, and offer consultations, if you are eligible

If you aren’t based in Myanmar, but are a freelancer working with a client based in Myanmar

Please take the following steps by 11:59 p.m. MMT on January 30, 2024:

• Submit any final work to your client based in Myanmar.
• Ask them to make any final payments by 11:59 p.m. MMT on January 30. (We’ve notified them too, but we also suggest that you reach out to them.)

My credit card is accepted at other merchants, why can’t I use it on Upwork?

If I move out of Myanmar, can I use Upwork again as a client?

Yes! If you move outside of Myanmar and create a billing method in your new location, please let us know. We’ll need to review and verify the details first, but once we do we can reactivate your Upwork account. Please let us know by filing an account suspension appeal. We will reactivate your Upwork account once we have verified your details.
