Being certified in certain skills can help you attract and build trust with prospective clients. That’s why we developed Upwork Skill Certifications.
Skills assessment available in artificial intelligence (AI) include:
- Data analytics
- Generative AI
- Machine learning
Skill certifications are currently invitation-only. We will reach out to you if you meet the qualifications to take the assessment.
After you’re invited, you'll need to complete the certification process and pass the assessment. If you pass, you’ll receive a badge on your profile that helps clients know you’ve been independently certified in this skill.
Earn a certification in artificial intelligence
The Upwork Skill Certification assessment includes a mix of soft and hard skills across a range of question types: multiple-choice, text, video, and open coding. Question types may vary depending on the skill being assessed. Your assignment can include a combination of tasks, questions, and simulations.
The assessments are administered through a platform called Vervoe. You will be recorded as you complete the test.
Important guidelines
- When signing up and taking the test, use the email address associated with your Upwork account
- Before taking the test, you will be asked to test your camera and microphone to ensure they are working properly
- During the video question, your full face needs to be visible and your room should be well-lit. We will compare the person we see in the video recording against the identification you submitted when you passed the Upwork ID verification process
- The test is timed and only able to be completed once. We suggest you allocate more than 90 minutes
- Take the test in a room free of distractions and background noise
- Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. You can be banned from taking any Upwork Skill Certification tests if you get caught plagiarizing, even after you pass the test and get the badge

Take the skill assessment test:
- After you’ve been invited, sign up using the email address associated with your Upwork account
- Find your email invitation in your inbox. Check your spam/junk folder, if needed
- Ensure you're using a supported browser and device. We recommend using a desktop or laptop for optimal performance
- Test your equipment and internet connection before starting
- Carefully read all instructions provided
- During the video question, your full face needs to be visible and your room should be well-lit. We will compare the person we see in the video recording against the identification you submitted when you passed the Upwork ID verification process
- When you upload your video answer, do not exit the page until your upload is successful. We recommend keeping your video short and concise to help minimize the file size
- Take your assessment in a quiet, uninterrupted environment within the given timeframe. Be mindful of any time limits and review your answers before submitting

Your assessment will be manually reviewed. Please allow 10 business days to receive your results through email.
- If you pass, we add the badge to your profile. No further action is required from you to add the badge.
- If you do not pass, you may take the test again after six months. To request a second test, send an email to assessments@upwork.com
Frequently Asked Questions
At this time you cannot request to be invited to complete a skill certification. For the best chance of being invited in the future, we suggest you achieve a solid reputation, keep a complete and up-to-date profile that is not set to private, and maintain an active Upwork account in good standing.
Nothing will display on your Upwork profile. If you followed all the guidelines but didn’t achieve a passing score, you may request to retake the test again in six months. To request a second test, send an email to assessments@upwork.com. If you take the test without following the guidelines, you cannot retake the test. We are not able to provide additional details when guidelines aren’t met, so we recommend paying close attention to them beforehand.

We may reach out and ask if you’re interested in certifying your skills because you qualify and work in a relevant category. However, this doesn’t mean your exact skill is available. The current skills assessment list is regularly reviewed and updated. Feel free to regularly check back for any updates.

Though we can’t guarantee your future eligibility or the future availability of each test, we’re happy to re-evaluate when you’re ready to take the test. If you’ve been invited previously, email assessments@upwork.com when you’re ready to take the test. We will confirm the prior invitation and re-review eligibility and test availability then.
At this time, we can only offer one skill assessment per freelancer.
While taking the assessment there is a help icon on the bottom of the screen where you can send a message to Vervoe as you are completing the test. The Vervoe team will respond with troubleshooting steps.
At this time, we don’t have a practice test. The skill-specific test contains a combination of multiple choice, video, communication and text questions that test your knowledge of a specific language or set of languages.
Test scores are manually reviewed. Expect your results by email within 10 business days.
You may use search engines to assist you during the test. However, you have to maintain academic integrity throughout the process. Any form of plagiarism, including but not limited to copying content without proper attribution, will result in immediate disqualification from the current test and a permanent ineligibility to retake the test or participate in any future Upwork Skill Certification assessments. This policy will be enforced, even if you’ve already been awarded the badge. We strongly encourage you to produce original work to uphold the standards and credibility of the certification.
