Requested offer changes

Note:

This feature is being tested and is not available to everyone or across all platform experiences yet.

When you send an offer to a freelancer, they might want to work with you on your project but prefer different terms or want to suggest edits to the description of the work. To help you and the freelancer align quickly on the work and terms, they can request changes directly in the offer.

What are freelancer requests for changes?

Freelancers can request changes to key offer terms such as payment terms, timelines, or the job description.

You’ll be able to see their request in a side-by-side comparison with your original offer as you choose how to respond. The freelancer can also see and accept your original offer as long as it’s active.

Being able to request and consider changes directly within the offer streamlines negotiations, helping you and your freelancer reach an agreement while keeping the original offer terms available as a reference point. This collaborative process helps get your contract off to the best start by improving communication, clarity, and alignment on the project scope and payment details.

What changes the freelancer can request and when

Editable terms

Freelancers can request changes to several key parts of the offer within seven days of when you send the offer:

  • Project type: They can request that the job be hourly or fixed-price
  • Payment amounts: For hourly contracts, they can enter an hourly rate, and for fixed-price contracts they can enter an amount
  • Payment schedule for fixed-price contracts: They can ask for the payment to be made all at once at the end of a fixed-price contract or broken into milestones
  • Other payment details: They can request scheduled rate increases or additional automatic weekly payments
  • Scope of work: They can request edits to the job description
  • Other contract details: They can request changes to the start date, contract or milestone due dates, the hourly limit on hours worked each week, and whether they can enter time manually
  • Attachments: They can add attachments to the offer, but they cannot delete your attachments

Timing for offers and change requests:

  • Seven-day offer period: Offers expire after seven days of inactivity, and freelancers can send requests for changes at any time during those seven days. If you approve or modify an offer, the seven-day timer resets. Requests from freelancers, however, do not reset the timer
  • Request limits: Freelancers can submit up to three requests for offer changes within one hour
  • Concurrent activity: If you’re sending an offer at the same time a freelancer is requesting new changes, we’ll let you know. You can choose whether to proceed or review the new request first

How to view requested offer changes

You’ll get an automatic alert in your notifications that you have requested changes to review, with a link to the offer. Open the link to review the proposed edits compared to the current offer terms.

You can also see change requests by accessing your pending offers from your dashboard or from the main navigation bar’s drop-downs in Hire talent > Pending offers.

You’ll see a side-by-side comparison of the terms. You can also review the offer’s history, including offer requests and any versions of the offer that you have sent for consideration.

What happens next — responding and negotiating

Once a freelancer submits a request, you have several options. You can:

  • Approve changes: Accept the proposed changes and send a revised offer that includes those edits back to the freelancer
  • Reject changes: Reject the freelancer’s request, but keep the original offer terms active for the freelancer’s consideration
  • Modify the offer with your own changes: Update the offer with different terms than your original or the freelancer’s request, and resend the offer for the freelancer’s consideration
  • Withdraw the offer: If you don’t want to move forward with negotiations or have decided to hire someone else, you can simply withdraw the offer

The freelancer can also continue to respond or take action by doing the following:

  • Make more requests: They can submit additional changes if necessary, up to three change requests in a one-hour period
  • Accept an offer: They can still accept or decline the original offer as long as it’s active, even after submitting a request for changes, until you submit a modified offer. They can also accept or decline modified offers that you’ve sent for their consideration

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I respond to a freelancer’s request for changes with additional modifications?

Yes, as the client, you can modify an offer at any time during the negotiation process, including sending a modified offer in response to a freelancer’s request for changes.

Can the freelancer still accept my original offer if I reject their request for changes?

Yes, as long as you do not send a modified offer, withdraw your offer, or the offer has not expired, the freelancer can accept your original offer at any time, even if they have requested changes. Once you send a modified offer, they can accept your most recent offer even if they request additional changes.
