Question: I didn't get free Connects.

Answer: To help freelancers succeed on Upwork, we occasionally reward free Connects. We can’t share all the details of when Connects are given out because we don’t want dishonest people to “game” the system. What we can tell you is that free Connects may be granted if the freelancers meet certain conditions and it also depends on limited-time promotions.

We also grant free Connects if these milestones are achieved:

  • When you join Upwork, you can buy Connects or subscribe to Freelancer Plus. You'll get a one-time bonus of 50 Connects to start.
  • You get 30 free Connects if you earn the Rising Talent badge.
  • You’ll receive free Connects (amount varies) when you get an interview with an established client (clients who have hired and spent on Upwork before).
  • You may get a bonus Connects by completing trust and safety educational content, which will be shown in your proposals section when available.
  • If you earn Connects for an interview, some may be issued as refunds.

Question: Can I get a refund on Connects that I used to apply for jobs on Upwork?

Answer: Connects used for job proposals on Upwork are only returned to the user under specific circumstances; they are not refunded in terms of their cash value. Connects will be credited back to your account in the following situations:

  • If the client cancels a project before a contract is made, the Connects used for that proposal will be returned. However, this does not apply to job posts that have simply expired without hiring.
  • If a job post is removed because it violates our Terms of Service, the Connects used on that proposal will be returned.
  • If you have applied for a job and it becomes unavailable due to a violation of our guidelines, or if the job proposal turns out to be fraudulent, the Connects will also be credited back to your account for reuse.
