Additional tax considerations

  • Self-employment tax: Freelancers are responsible for paying Social Security and Medicare taxes, which are typically covered by employers for traditional employees.
  • Business expenses: You may be able to deduct certain business expenses from your taxable income. These expenses could include office supplies, software subscriptions, or professional development courses.
  • Estimated taxes: As a freelancer, you don't have taxes automatically withheld from your income. It's your responsibility to make estimated tax payments throughout the year to avoid penalties.

To find information on taxes and forms, go to Manage finances under your Upwork profile, and select Tax forms or Tax information. You'll be prompted to reenter your Upwork platform password for security purposes.
