Asking for feedback

Don't hesitate to ask for feedback, whether it's positive or constructive. Use it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Here are some phrases you can use to encourage clients to leave feedback:
  • "Thank you for the opportunity to work together. I hope you're satisfied with the results. Your feedback helps me improve. Please share your thoughts. Here's how to leave feedback on Upwork."

Proactively requesting feedback

You can also request feedback from your client during the contract if the following is true:
  • The contract started at least 30 days ago.

  • The client has made a payment within the last 30 days.

  • The client hasn't provided feedback in the last 30 days.
To request feedback, go to the Feedback tab in the Contract Workroom and select Request Feedback.

Managing unresponsiveness

It's important to set clear communication expectations at the beginning of a project. Talk about your preferred ways to communicate and how quickly you expect responses. Regular check-ins and updates can help keep things moving smoothly. If communication halts, don't hesitate to contact the client. Let them know you're available and ready to help.
  • Address client unresponsiveness: If a client stops responding, it's a good idea to check in with them. Review your initial communication and agreed-upon deadlines to understand what's happening. If there's been a significant delay, contact the client and ask if everything is okay. If you don't hear back, consider contacting Upwork support for help. If the silence continues, explore options like contacting Upwork support.

  • Unresponsiveness on an hourly contract: If you're on an hourly contract and the client isn't responding, you might need to take steps to protect your interests. You could consider ending the contract. Even though there might be payment delays, Upwork's Hourly Protection can sometimes help protect your earnings.

  • Unresponsiveness on a fixed-price contract: Avoid losing the remaining money in escrow when finishing a fixed-price contract. Make sure you complete all the project milestones before ending the contract. If the client doesn't respond to your final work, the money will usually be released after two weeks. However, you might need to file a dispute if the client disagrees with your work.

Consider this

You have just completed a two-month project for a small business client. The client is satisfied with the final product and has paid in full. The contract is nearing its end, and you want to ensure a positive ending and potentially secure future opportunities with this client. How should you approach your client to request feedback and explore opportunities for future collaboration? What specific questions or statements could you use to encourage the client to provide feedback and discuss potential future projects?
