Once the work for the contract is complete, the independent professional and the client both have the ability to close the contract. Be sure to communicate with the client before closing a contract. After closing the contract, the client has 14 days to leave a review. You can write a review for your client as well, which might make them even more likely to write one for you.
Upwork allows clients and freelancers to end a contract at any time. It's always best to communicate with your client before ending a contract. Here are some additional tips for a smooth process:
- Open communication: Discuss the situation with your client. Understanding their perspective can help resolve any issues and potentially continue the contract.
- Project completion: Ensure all work is completed to the client's satisfaction and address any outstanding tasks or concerns.
- Proactive closure: If a client hasn't closed a completed project, follow up with them to encourage closure. If they remain unresponsive, consider closing it yourself. This helps minimize the potential impact on your Job Success Score and avoids multiple consecutively closed contracts without feedback.
- Go to Deliver work > Your active contracts.
- Choose the contract's title.
- Select the (...) options menu and choose End contract.
- In the modal that appears, select End contract to confirm.
Leaving feedback
When closing a contract, it's recommended that you leave feedback for your client. This may encourage them to reciprocate, and they'll have 14 days to leave a review. Not only does it build your profile to show off quality feedback from past projects, but leaving feedback can also inform future freelancers about the client.
