Milestones are used to define deliverables and payments that you and your freelancer have agreed upon. Defining milestones helps to set clear expectations, prevent miscommunication, and create a natural feedback channel as the contract progresses. This is especially helpful for larger contracts as it allows you and your freelancer to work together and earn each other’s trust before continuing on with later phases of the contract.

You can continue adding milestones throughout the duration of the contract, as required. For advice on structuring milestones, check out the below video and this article in our Hiring Headquarters.

Creating Milestones (VIDEO)

If you and your freelancer have agreed to add another milestone

  1. Go to Jobs > My Jobs
  2. Open the contract you wish to update
  3. Click the '+ New Milestone' button
  4. Enter the Milestone details and click 'Save' or 'Save and Add Another'

Please note: You may only fund one milestone at a time. Funds must be released on the current milestone before the next one can be activated and funded. You cannot change the order of existing milestones, however, you can choose to release a partial milestone payment. Any remaining funds can be used to fund the next milestone, or you can request an escrow refund for the remaining amount.

When you approve a milestone you will be asked if you want to end the contract or keep it open. You can then activate (or create) the next milestone.
