Add and activate more milestones

Add another milestone

Milestones spell out what you are to receive and pay for. You can work with your freelancer to define, submit, and pay for one milestone at a time, or to plan out all milestones at the start of the contract. Defining milestones clearly helps set expectations for you and your freelancer and prevent miscommunication. This is especially helpful for larger contracts as it allows you and your freelancer to work together and earn each other’s trust before continuing on with later phases of the contract.

If you and your freelancer have agreed to add another milestone on an active fixed-price contract:

  1. Go to Jobs > My Jobs and choose the contract
  2. Click the + New Milestone button
  3. Enter the Milestone

Although you can create multiple milestones at one time, you must ‘activate’ milestones individually. You must release the previously funded milestone before you can activate the next milestone. You won’t fund these additional milestones until they’re activated.

Activate the next milestone

When you approve a milestone, keep the contract open if you and your freelancer plan more work on this contract. Then you can create (or activate) the next milestone. Although you can create multiple, unfunded milestones at one time, you must ‘activate’ milestones in the order they were created. This means you must release the previously funded milestone before you can activate the next milestone.

If you need to create the next milestone:

  1. Go to Jobs > My Jobs and choose the contract
  2. Choose the Review & Pay button and approve the previous milestone
  3. Choose the + New Milestone button
  4. Add the milestone name, due date, amount, and a detailed message describing the work to be done

If you need to activate the next already-created milestone:

  1. Go to Jobs > My Jobs and choose the contract
  2. Choose the Activate Next Milestone button
