In some cases, we ask users to have a brief video chat to verify their profile. The call should take less than ten minutes and we will ask you a few questions about the information in your profile. You may be requested to show proof of identity, such as a government-issued ID, during the call.

Until the call is completed, a temporary hold may be placed on your account. If a hold is placed, you will not be able to submit new proposals or change your profile photo. However, we will resume your account upon successful verification.

To complete the required video call

  • Make sure you have a working webcam and microphone
  • Click on the link in the Action required message shown on your account, or the email entitled Action Required: Please Verify Your Identity.

I don’t have a webcam. How else can I verify?

If you don’t have a computer, tablet or phone that has a camera, you can use any computer with a webcam (a friend’s, library, internet cafe, etc.). The device you use does not have to be yours.

When can I verify?

Our agents are available 24/7 to speak with you via webcam so you can complete this process any time.

What happens if I do not pass the verification process?
Freelancers that are required to verify but do not do so will have their accounts placed on hold. The hold will prevent freelancers from withdrawing earnings, submitting proposals to new jobs, accepting direct hires, or showing up in search results. Any active proposals that have been submitted will also be canceled. The hold will not affect your ability to work on existing contracts. Once you successfully pass the verification process, this hold will be removed.
Is the video call in English? What if I don’t speak English?

Upwork is an English-speaking website and our customer support team will need to communicate with you in English. However, the call is not designed as an English language test.
