Types of identity verification

We routinely ask freelancers and clients to verify their identities to help keep Upwork safe. This is outlined in the Upwork Terms of Service.

Upwork verifies identity in several ways:


Reasons you could be asked to verify your identity

  • To determine ownership of an account, including U.S. Government Know Your Customer (KYC) compliance program
  • To confirm your location to qualify for location-specific jobs
  • To assist you in resuming your account
  • Any other reason that Upwork deems appropriate to maintain the integrity of the marketplace


Unable to verify

If you're unable to verify your identity, you may not be able to continue working through Upwork. That means pausing contracts and not allowing any withdrawals (funds would be returned to your clients).

Warning—Deliberately uploading falsified documentation is a crime and violators will be permanently suspended. Upwork may report users who attempt to send fake or falsified documents. This is why it’s so important you don’t crop, rotate, touch up, adjust colors, or alter the images in any way.

Incident Status

Our records show your Upwork account is not active.

This might be due to no account activity (earnings, payments, contracts, etc.) or because we had to suspend it. When we suspend an account we send an email explaining the reason and whether or not you can take steps to reverse the suspension. Please review that email for more details.
