Activate next milestone

Milestones spell out what you are to receive from your freelancer and pay them for. Defining milestones clearly helps set expectations for you and your freelancer and prevents miscommunication. In most cases, you’ll to plan out all milestones at the start of the contract (recommended). You must pay for the previous milestone before you can activate the next milestone. Alternatively, you can create separate contracts for the different deliverables. Those can be simultaneous or overlap as needed.

Activate the next milestone

When you approve a milestone, keep the contract open if you and your freelancer have agreed on more work. You must ‘activate’ milestones in the order they were created. This means you must release the previously funded milestone before you can activate the next milestone.

To activate the next milestone:

  1. Go to Jobs > My Jobs and choose the contract
  2. Choose the Activate Next Milestone button

Add another milestone

If you and your freelancer (and Upwork compliance* specialist, if you have one) have agreed to add another milestone on an active fixed-price contract:

  1. Go to Jobs > My Jobs and choose the contract
  2. Click the + New Milestone button
  3. Enter the Milestone

* Don’t know if you’re enrolled in compliance services? Go to Settings > My Info > Company details. If it says "Enterprise Compliance," you are enrolled in compliance services. If it says "Enterprise Standard,” you are not. Learn more about Compliance Services.
