How to set up Instant Pay for fast withdrawals

Learn how Upwork’s Instant Pay lets U.S. freelancers withdraw earnings to a Visa or Mastercard debit card within minutes for a small fee.

If you are a U.S.-based freelancer, the Instant Pay option allows you to withdraw your available Upwork earnings to a linked Visa or Mastercard debit card, typically within minutes. Only eligible debit cards are supported.

How do I add Instant Pay as a withdrawal method?

  1. Go to Account settings (desktop) or Settings (mobile app) > Withdraw now
  2. Under Withdrawal methods, choose Add a method
  3. Select Set up next to Instant Pay
  4. Enter your debit card details and choose Continue

To protect your security, the new withdrawal method will become active within three days after you confirm the account.

When you're ready to withdraw your earnings, you can use Instant Pay the same way as any other withdrawal method.

Pro Tip:

Set up Instant Pay in advance — so when you’re ready to withdraw, your funds are ready to move.

Why can't I add my U.S. Visa/Mastercard for Instant Pay?

Not all debit cards support Instant Pay. We check if your bank supports Visa Direct or Mastercard Send. If your card isn’t eligible, it won’t be accepted.

How long will it take to receive my funds when I use Instant Pay?

Once Instant Pay is fully set up, your money usually lands in your bank account within minutes. Occasionally, your bank may need a little extra time to complete the processing. If you run into issues, your bank can help resolve card-related errors.

Why am I asked to choose an automatic schedule if I only want to use Instant Pay occasionally?

You can use Instant Pay for manual withdrawals or set it as your automatic method. To use it only occasionally, simply make it your secondary withdrawal method.

Can I use Instant Pay for automatic withdraws?

Yes — but you'll need to set it as your preferred withdrawal method. Otherwise, scheduled withdrawals will use whichever method is marked as primary.

Note:

Upwork only triggers automatic withdrawals when your balance reaches your chosen threshold (between $100 USD and $1,000 USD). You can always withdraw sooner using Withdraw now.

Is there a limit on how much I can transfer to my bank?

Yes — the max per transfer is $2,999 USD.

How is Instant Pay different from the Withdraw now option?

They are similar but work a little differently:

  • Instant Pay: A specific withdrawal method that sends funds directly to a U.S. debit card
  • Withdraw now: A manual action you can take to withdraw funds anytime, even if you have automatic withdrawals set up — no matter which method you’re using.

You can use Withdraw now with Instant Pay or with any other withdrawal method you’ve added.
