Upwork’s network reaches over 180 countries around the world. Because each country has its own rules and regulations, some users have taxes that are specific to where they live and work. In India, this includes the GST.

What is Indian GST?

In India, the Goods and Services Tax (or GST) is an indirect tax on the supply of most goods and services. This includes e-commerce operators who are located or registered in India. In general, GST law requires any person with a turnover of INR 2m (INR 20 lac) or above to be registered. 

Does Upwork collect GST?

In short, not at this time. We are not registered in India and we will not assess the GST on transactions there now. We are collecting GST numbers from Upwork users in India in case they are needed in the future in order to collect the tax.

If at some point we decide to collect the GST in India, we will let you know.

Please be sure to use the correct format for your GST id number as defined by the Indian government. The correct format is: ##AAAAA####A#AE

- A "#" sign means you should enter a number in that spot
- An "A" means a letter should be entered in the spot
- The last digit, designated as "E," may be either a number or letter
