Learn how to subscribe to or manage your Upwork Plus plan using Apple’s in-app purchase system on iOS. Includes billing, cancellation, and renewal steps.


 

Can I subscribe to an Upwork plan using Apple?

Yes! Freelancers and agencies can purchase Freelancer Plus or Agency Plus plans using Apple’s in-app purchase system on the Upwork iOS app. It works just like any other Apple subscription and gets billed through your Apple account.

 

How does Apple in-app billing work for my Upwork plan?

  • Apple manages all billing and renewals
  • Your subscription is linked to your Apple ID
  • You’ll need to manage or cancel your plan through your Apple settings — not on Upwork.com
Note: In-app purchases may cost slightly more than subscriptions purchased on Upwork.com, due to Apple’s processing fees.

 

How do I subscribe to an Upwork plan through the iOS app?

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A valid Apple ID
  • A payment method connected to your Apple account

To subscribe:

  1. Open the Upwork app on your iOS device
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Choose your membership plan
  4. Follow the prompts to purchase

 

How do I cancel a subscription I bought through Apple?

You'll need to cancel directly through your Apple account:

  1. Go to your iOS settings
  2. Tap your name > Subscriptions
  3. Tap the Upwork subscription
  4. Tap Cancel subscription


Note: If you subscribed through the iOS app, you'll need to manage your subscription through your Apple account settings. If you try to downgrade or cancel on Upwork.com instead, you’ll run into this error message: "An error occurred while subscribing to the selected membership." I scheduled a downgrade through Apple, but I changed my mind. How do I stay on a paid plan?

You’ve got two options:

  1. Go back into your Apple subscriptions and reselect your Upwork membership before the downgrade takes effect
  2. Or wait until your plan reverts to Basic, then resubscribe through Upwork.com

 

What happens if Apple can’t process my payment?

If Apple can’t process your payment (for example, if your card expired or you're over your limit), they’ll let Upwork know. You’ll get a few days' notice to fix the issue directly with Apple.

If it’s not resolved, your plan membership will automatically downgrade to the free Basic plan.

Heads-up: Apple may continue trying to charge your payment method for up to 60 days. If successful, they’ll renew your subscription automatically.

 

Why does it cost more to subscribe from the iOS app?

Apple charges a fee for in-app purchases, which may make your subscription slightly more expensive than purchasing directly on Upwork.com.

Want to avoid extra fees? Subscribe on Upwork.com instead. Just be sure to cancel your Apple subscription first to avoid being charged twice.
