We understand that plans change. That’s why you can cancel a Project Catalog order within 24 hours of purchasing. 

To cancel a project order: 

  • Log in to your Upwork account. 
  • Find the contract you’d like to cancel under the Jobs tab. 
  • Select Cancel Contract in the top right corner of the Contract Workroom 

After cancelling, the money you placed in escrow will be returned to you in full (please allow up to five business days). 

After 24 hours, we unfortunately can’t guarantee a refund. In most cases, freelancers have already begun work on your project or may have even finished it. If you cancel your order after 24 hours have passed we will ask the freelancer to refund your money, but the decision will be theirs. 

Pro Tip: In many cases, freelancers are more than happy to work with you if your approach to the project has changed. Rather than cancel the project, consider messaging your freelancer to discuss how to move forward.

How do I cancel a project? 

To cancel a project: 

  • Log in to your Upwork account. 
  • Find the contract you’d like to cancel under the Jobs tab. 
  • Select Cancel in the top right corner of the project details.

Will I get my money back? 

If you cancel within 24 hours of purchasing the project, the money in escrow that you spent on the project will be returned to you in up to 5 business days.  If you cancel after 24 hours, we will initiate a refund request, but cannot guarantee any money back. 

Any refunds may take up to five business days to be deposited back into your account. 

What happens if I want to cancel a project later than 24 hours after purchasing it? 

Unfortunately, in most cases, freelancers have already begun work on your project and we cannot guarantee a refund later than 24 hours after purchase.  Cancelling at this time will automatically generate a refund request and your freelancer must approve it. 

The project I bought was cancelled. Now what? 

Just as we allow you, as a client, to cancel a project within 24 hours, we also allow freelancers to do the same. Sometimes, a freelancer becomes overbooked or can’t take on the work. You may message the freelancer to see if they can take the project at a later time, or choose another project entirely.
If you didn’t submit the project requirements within 48 hours after purchasing the project, the project is automatically canceled. 

Either way, the money you spent will be refunded in up to five business days.
