How do I choose the right project?
You’ve got options here. When browsing a project, you’ll be able to see a freelancer’s previous work and profile, reviews from other clients, answers to frequently asked questions, and more. You can review:
Project details
After selecting a project, you can scroll down to learn more about what is offered in this project. Each freelancer writes about their project and approach to work here. File format and type of deliverables are also listed.
Service tiers
Freelancers often offer their projects in “tiers,” which are different levels of the same project, designed to give you more options. If the project you want offers tiers, you’ll see them listed under project details with a chart that compares each tier, side-by-side. Tiers can go from a basic package and move upwards in scope and cost, providing you with easily accessible upgrade options.
Add-ons
Many projects feature add-ons. These are customizable, a la carte options to projects in case you need something beyond the project’s main scope. This could include extra revisions, faster delivery times, more final files, etc. If the freelancer offers these, you’ll find them listed beneath the service tier chart and can select them in the buying process.
Freelancer overview
Each freelancer has a unique profile and portfolio to describe their background and showcase their work. Each freelancer provides an overview of who they are and what their project entails right on the page. If you’d like more information, there are links to view the freelancer’s full profile and portfolio.
Freelancer rating and reviews
Under each freelancer’s About section is a rating, received based on feedback from other clients on Upwork. Freelancers are rated on six different attributes: skills, quality, availability, deadlines, communication, and cooperation. You can see reviews left by other clients as well.
Steps for completing your project
Here, you’ll see the requirements your freelancer needs before they can start your project. You’ll need to answer the requirements after buying, but before the freelancer can start working. Freelancers can’t begin working until you submit the requirements. Common requirements could include goals or expectations, files necessary to work with, reference photos etc. For example, if you chose a business card design project, requirements could include the name of the company, logo, phone number and address, etc.
This is where you’ll also see the steps your freelancer will take to complete your project.
Still undecided?
You can message the freelancer and ask personalized questions to get more information. Many freelancers are willing to set up a time for a call or video chat, just ask! You can connect with the freelancer before buying their project by selecting the Message button.
What if I am not happy with the work?
After the freelancer submits the work, you have the option to approve the project or request changes. The funds are not released to the freelancer until you approve the project, or until 14 days pass without you responding to the request for an approval.
As you find the right freelancer for your project, Upwork works behind the scenes to provide the following:
- Payment protection for clients to make sure you get the work you pay for
- Help when you need it through dispute assistance, help articles, and live support agents
