Using a credit or debit card issued by an Indian bank

Effective October 1, 2021, the Reserve Bank Of India (RBI) issued an e-mandate on cards for recurring transactions. This mandate may require an additional step of authentication for recurring transactions if your credit or debit card has been issued by an Indian bank.

Who is impacted?

All clients that have a credit or debit card  issued by an Indian bank may be impacted by this e-mandate.

What happens if my payment is declined?

We will automatically attempt to re-charge your credit or debit card to see if the payment will go through. However, if we cannot successfully charge your card, we may place a hold on your account until any past-due payments are made. You can check and pay your balance by following these steps:

  1. Going to Settings > Billing & Payments
  2. Select “Pay Now
  3. Choose a billing method and the amount to pay, then select “Pay Now
What if I didn’t receive a notification from my bank to approve the transaction?

We recommend reaching out to your bank to ask how you should authenticate future recurring charges.

Does this affect my other, non-recurring transactions?

No, this should only impact recurring payments. One-time payments made to Upwork should be processed successfully.

Can I opt-out of this e-mandate?

Please check with the bank that issued your card, we unfortunately don’t know what options may be available for you.

Where can I find more information about this e-mandate?

Please visit the Reserve Bank of India’s website for more information.
