An agency is a business that sells the services of multiple freelancers on Upwork. We've created a guide to agencies to help you decide if an agency is right for you.

Hire an Agency Freelancer

When you hire an agency freelancer, a manager from the agency will be notified at every step and may choose to be involved in the relationship. They may negotiate the rates, participate in the interview, or even remain involved during the contract. It’s up to the agency to decide how to manage their relationships.

Agency freelancers appear in search results and your list of proposals differently than independent freelancers. This lets you know there’s an agency involved and helps you evaluate both the freelancer and the agency as a whole.

All contracts with an agency are paid to the agency, rather than the freelancer named on your contract. The agency’s payments to their team are done privately outside of Upwork.

Join an Agency

The only way to join an agency is to be invited by an agency administrator. Your relationship with them (as an employee or contractor) is managed privately outside of Upwork.

Create an Agency

If you wish to create an agency and sell the services of other workers, here’s how:

  1. Click the account drop-down menu at the top right and choose Settings.
  2. Go to Settings > My Teams and choose the Create a Company at the bottom.
  3. Select the Create an Agency option and fill out the form.
  4. Learn more about running an agency, including adding team members, controlling permissions, and submitting proposals.

Once you’re setup, use the Accounts menu to switch between your agency, client company, and/or freelancer profile.
