Upwork supports multiple billing methods—including credit cards, PayPal, and U.S. bank accounts—for client payments. You can manage these from your account settings, designate a primary method, and keep backups to avoid disruptions. Bank accounts used as primary billing methods may require an additional active method on file.
Accepted billing methods
To make paying your freelancers as easy as possible, Upwork accepts multiple billing methods. Currently, they are:
- Credit or prepaid card
- PayPal
- Bank account (for qualifying U.S. clients)
- Venmo
You can designate a primary billing method and keep other billing methods on file as backups. You can also designate multiple primary billing methods across different teams.
Edit a billing method
To change, edit, or remove a billing method go to Account settings (desktop) or Settings (mobile app) > Billing & Payments and scroll to the "Manage billing methods" section.
Your credit card number or PayPal account cannot be edited. To update these, add them as a new billing method.
Remove a billing method
Only a secondary billing method may be removed. To remove a primary billing method, add a secondary one, then set it as your primary billing method.
If your primary billing method is a bank account, you may need to keep at least one additional, active billing method on file. This makes sure your work won’t be interrupted.
- Go to Account settings (desktop) or Settings (mobile app) > Billing & Payments
- Select Remove
Do I need to add more than one billing method?
Not always, but you may need an additional billing method (PayPal or a payment card) if you use your bank account as your primary billing method.
Adding more than one billing method may help avoid account disruption in case a transaction fails or your card expires.
