Why do I have to give Upwork access to my camera in order to verify my identity?

To complete your identity verification, we’ll schedule a quick video meeting with you — and we’ll need your camera turned on for that conversation.

Here’s why:

  • We need to see you on camera during the call so our team can confirm that you’re the person associated with your Upwork account
  • In some cases, we’ll ask you to show a valid government-issued photo ID, and we may compare your live image to your ID to help prevent impersonation or fraud

This step helps us maintain a safe, secure, and trusted marketplace for both freelancers and clients.
