We know that feedback is important to any business, and we realize that you might not want to wait until the end of a longer contract to get feedback from your client.
That’s why we added mid-contract feedback on certain contracts, so that your client can choose to leave you public feedback before the contract ends.
Note: You and your client can still leave feedback for each other about your experience when your contract ends. Learn more about how to do that here.
PRO TIP
There are two types of feedback for contracts at Upwork: public and private. Mid-contract feedback is public and shows on your Work History if you are a freelancer (it does not appear on agency profiles). Mid-contract feedback does not factor into your Job Success Score. Learn more here.
Request feedback
Your client can choose to proactively give mid-contract feedback or you can request feedback from your client when the contract meets these terms:
- The contract started at least 30 days ago.
- The client has made a payment on the contract within the last 30 days.
- The client has not provided feedback in the last 30 days.
To ask for feedback, choose Request Feedback under the Feedback tab in the contract room.
Your client has 14 days to provide the feedback before your request expires. If they choose not to respond, you can ask again after the 14 days are up but not before then. While feedback is important, you don’t want to make your client feel pressured.
Provide feedback
A client can choose to proactively provide mid-contract feedback, or a freelancer can request it. When a request is sent, clients have 14 days to provide feedback. If a request expires, a freelancer can submit a new request.
- If feedback is not provided within 14 days, the request expires.
- If feedback is requested and not yet provided by the client, the freelancer cannot submit another request until the 14-day window has passed.
Feedback gathered
This public feedback will show in a freelancer's work history. There are no impacts to your Job Success Score. Learn more about how we calculate JSS here.
Frequently Asked Questions
In short, no. Clients will still have the option to leave feedback when a contract ends, however, and that feedback is factored into your JSS.
We designed mid-contract feedback to help you get public feedback for your work history even if you are working on longer contracts. You can’t reply publicly, but you will get the opportunity to do so at the end of the contract. If you are concerned about mid-contract feedback you’ve received or have other concerns, we suggest reaching out to your client directly to resolve any issues. Your client can provide additional mid-contract feedback in the future, or feedback when the contract ends.
In order to request mid-contract feedback certain criteria must be met:
- The contract started at least 30 days ago.
- The client made a payment on the contract in the last 30 days.
- The client has not provided feedback in the past 30 days (using the date that the feedback was last provided, not the date that the feedback was requested).
You can request mid-contract feedback from a client on any open contract if the eligibility criteria is met. Just choose the “Request Feedback” option under the Feedback tab in the contract room.
When you choose the “Request Feedback” button, we let your client know that you’ve requested feedback by sending them an email and a message in Upwork Messages.
When you request feedback, your client has 14 days to provide it. If they do not provide feedback within this timeframe, the request expires and you can submit another (if eligibility requirements are still met). If you requested feedback but your client has not yet provided it, you won’t be able to submit another request until the 14-day window has passed.
