What kinds of PDF work samples can I add to my project?

Add PDF samples that relate to the service you're offering and show the kind of work a client can expect from you.

Here are a few examples:

  •
    • Writing: A blog post, case study, or email campaign
    • Design: A brochure, one-pager, or presentation slide
    • Marketing or strategy: A report, spreadsheet, or campaign summary
    • Technical: A workflow diagram or documentation sample

You can upload up to two PDFs per project, and each must be under 2MB.

What are the requirements for PDFs I upload to my project?

Your PDF must be:

  •
    • Your original work
    • Relevant to the service in your project
    • Under 2MB
    • Clear and easy to read
    • Formatted professionally, with strong visuals or writing on the first three pages (only those are visible in previews)

It must not:

  •
    • Include your contact information (even in footers or metadata)
    • Contain logos you don’t own the rights to
    • Use AI-generated content passed off as your own
    • Include blurred, low-quality visuals or plagiarized content
    • Violate any confidentiality agreements
    • Contain clickbait, inappropriate language, or violate Upwork's Terms of Service

How can I make my PDF stand out?

Before uploading your sample, ask:

  •
    • Is the title clear and descriptive at a glance?
    • Is the layout professional and easy to scan?
    • Are the fonts and visuals crisp and readable?
    • Have you proofread or reviewed it for accuracy?

Tip: Put your strongest work on page one — clients see the first three pages in the project preview.

Why was my project rejected after uploading a PDF?

If your project was rejected, check that your PDF sample:

  •
    • Does not include personal contact info
    • Only includes logos or content you have rights to
    • Matches the type of work offered in your project
    • Follows all policies in Upwork's Terms of Service

Note: The PDF cannot be your project cover. You'll still need to add a picture or video.
