Learn how Upwork’s working style assessment helps freelancers showcase traits like clear communication and accountability.

What is the working style assessment for freelancers?

The working style assessment is a short, scenario-based quiz that helps you highlight how you approach work—things like how you communicate, solve problems, and stay accountable. It’s especially helpful if you're new to Upwork or want to build trust with clients before you’ve received much feedback.

There are no right or wrong answers, just insights into your natural strengths and preferences.

When you complete the assessment, we detect your strongest working styles and display them on your profile to help clients quickly understand the way you work and decide if you’re a good match.

How does the working style assessment work?

Take the assessment

You’ll answer 13 multiple-choice questions, each based on a real-world work scenario.

Get your results right away

You’ll immediately see a summary of your working style (like “You’re a clear communicator” or “You’re solution-oriented”). A copy is also sent to your email.

Show traits on your profile

If you score highly in a specific trait, and you haven’t yet received enough client feedback in that area, that trait will appear publicly on your profile.

The four traits

  • Clear communicator
  • Accountable for outcomes
  • Solution-oriented
  • Detail-oriented

How do I take the working style assessment for freelancers?

  • New freelancers: You’ll see the option during profile setup
  • Existing freelancers (with no earnings): You may see it after logging in or during profile updates

Are freelancers required to take the working style assessment on Upwork?

No, it’s totally optional. But it can really help if you want to stand out and build trust quickly.

How long does it take?

The working style assessment should take you about 10 minutes. Just 13 questions, one per screen.

Can I fail the working style assessment?

No. There’s no pass/fail. This is all about identifying your natural strengths so we can reflect those on your profile.

What working style traits do clients see on my profile?

Traits from your assessment will appear on your profile when they’re strongly reflected in your responses and you don’t yet have enough client feedback to replace them. If a trait disappears over time, it means feedback has taken priority.

Trait badges are designed to clearly show whether they’re based on your assessment or actual client feedback.

  • Single Strength → One trait clearly stands out. This means you have a distinct, dominant working style that shows up across different situations
  • Dual Strengths → Two traits surfaced evenly. You likely shift between two strong approaches depending on what’s needed
  • Triple Strengths → Three traits appeared with similar frequency. This suggests a broad, adaptable working style with multiple strengths that balance each other

Remember: This isn’t about ability or performance. It’s about understanding your natural preferences and showing how you work best.

Can I retake the working style assessment?

Yes, you can retake the assessment again after a year has passed. Retaking helps reaffirm traits or reflect changes in your working style.

One of my previous traits was removed. Why?

Traits from the assessment are meant to help you stand out early on. Once you’ve received four or more pieces of client feedback that align with a specific trait, that feedback becomes the primary source of truth and the original trait that is based on your self-assessment is removed.

This shift ensures your profile reflects real client experience and reinforces the strengths you demonstrate through your work on Upwork.
