Note:

Work Now is currently being tested with a limited group of freelancers. If you don't see this feature on your account, it isn't available to you yet.

How Work Now works

When you enable the Work Now availability toggle, you opt into a pool of active freelancers. Clients posting Hire Now jobs can see your profile. You can browse a live feed of these jobs, apply to the ones that match your skills and rate, and get hired quickly.

Once hired, clients expect that you start work the same day.

Getting started with Work Now

  1. Log in to your Upwork account and navigate to Find work.
  2. Enable Upwork Now by toggling "Work Now". This signals to clients that you're available for on-demand work.
  3. Agreement modal. When enabling Upwork Now, you'll see an agreement modal. Review the terms (including expectations for starting work the same day) and confirm.
  4. Session starts. Your Upwork Now session is now active. You'll see the Upwork Now job feed and receive notifications about matching opportunities.
  5. Session timing. Your session ends if you don't respond to a client invite or message within 5 minutes. In a web browser, your session also ends after 5 minutes of inactivity. If you use the mobile app, there's no inactivity time limit. Your mobile session will remain active as long as you remain responsive to invites or messages within 5 minutes. You can turn the toggle back on to start a new session or turn it off at any time.
  6. Browse the live job feed. See jobs filtered by your skills and rates. Jobs display a countdown timer showing how long the client is actively hiring.
  7. Apply to jobs. Click "Apply Now" on jobs you want.
  8. Get hired. Clients review applications and send offers. Once a client sends you an offer, review the details and accept to start the contract immediately.
  9. Start work the same day. Once hired, begin work right away per the agreed timeline.

Best practices for Work Now

  • Keep your profile current. A complete, up-to-date profile with accurate skills, rates, and portfolio work helps you get matched to better opportunities and stand out to clients reviewing your application.
  • Apply strategically. Review the job details, timeline, and client requirements before applying. Only apply for work you can actually start and make progress on the same day.
  • Monitor actively. Check your notifications frequently and browse the job feed during active availability. Best-fit opportunities go to responsive freelancers who apply quickly.
  • Be responsive. If a client messages you after sending an offer, respond promptly. Clients on Upwork Now expect speed.
  • Clarify details before accepting. If you have questions about scope, timeline, or deliverables, ask the client in messages before accepting the offer. This prevents surprises after the contract starts.
  • Deliver quality work. Upwork Now contracts affect your Job Success Score (JSS) just like other contracts on Upwork. Your JSS reflects your overall history with clients on Upwork and is based on your client relationships and feedback.
  • Manage your workload. Be realistic about how much work you can take on. If you're already committed to other projects, make sure you have capacity for same-day delivery.

Frequently asked questions

How long does my Upwork Now session stay active?

Your session stays active as long as you're engaging with the platform. If you don't take any action for 5 minutes (viewing jobs, reading messages, or viewing offers), your session automatically ends. Simply click the “Work Now” toggle to start a new session. If you're using the mobile app, your session will remain active as long as you remain responsive to invites or messages within 5 minutes.

What happens when my session ends?

When your session ends, you'll no longer appear in clients' Upwork Now freelancer pool. You can re-enable the toggle anytime to restart your session and become visible again. Any pending offers or messages from clients remain active even if your session has ended.

Can I keep Work Now enabled all day?

No. Upwork Now is for when you're actively available. Enabling it signals to clients that you're ready to respond and work immediately. If you're unavailable or not monitoring, disable the toggle so clients aren't misled about your availability.

How do applications and offers work?

Your application includes your profile information and any message you add. Clients review applications and send offers to freelancers they want to hire. When you receive an offer, you can review it and accept to start the contract.

What if I'm not sure about a job?

Review the job details carefully before applying. Check the scope, timeline, rate, and client profile. You're never obligated to accept an offer if the terms don't work for you.

Can I decline an offer?

Yes. You can decline any offer. If you decline, the contract doesn't start, and you remain available for other opportunities.

Can I apply to multiple jobs at once?

Yes. You can apply to multiple Upwork Now jobs. However, manage your workload carefully. If you're hired for multiple same-day projects, make sure you have the capacity to deliver quality work on both within the agreed timelines.

What if a client doesn't respond after I apply?

Clients are actively hiring on Upwork Now, but they may receive multiple applications. If you don't hear back quickly, continue browsing and applying to other opportunities. Clients send offers to the freelancers they want to hire.

Does Upwork Now affect my regular Upwork profile?

Your profile, rating, and job history remain the same. Upwork Now contracts affect your Job Success Score (JSS) just like other contracts on Upwork. Your JSS reflects your overall history with clients on Upwork and is based on your client relationships and feedback.

Can I still work on regular Upwork jobs while using Upwork Now?

Yes. You can have Upwork Now enabled while maintaining regular client relationships. However, remember that Upwork Now jobs have an expectation of same-day start. Manage your time carefully if you're juggling both Upwork Now and regular ongoing projects.

Is there a minimum or maximum number of Upwork Now jobs I can take?

No limits per se, but be realistic about your capacity. If you accept multiple jobs, ensure you can deliver quality work on each one within the agreed timeline. Your profile rating reflects the quality and timeliness of all your work.
