What billing methods can I use as a client on Upwork?
Upwork offers a few billing options, and what’s available to you can depend on your location and billing history. You’ll see your specific options in Account Settings > Billing & Payments.
Here’s a quick look at accepted billing methods:
Credit card
You can use most major credit cards, including:
- Visa
- Mastercard
- Discover
- American Express
- Diners Club (and Diners Club International)
- Prepaid cards

Note: If you're using a Visa card to pay both domestic and international freelancers in the same billing period, you might see “split payments” on your statement. That just means your payment was processed in two parts — domestic and international — there’s no extra fee involved.
PayPal
If you have a PayPal account, it’s easy to link and use as your billing method. Learn more about linking your PayPal account.
Venmo
Available for U.S. clients with a verified Venmo account. Just link it in your billing settings and you’re good to go. Learn more about linking your Venmo account.
Bank account (ACH)
If you're in the U.S. and have a qualifying Upwork billing history, you might also be able to pay directly from your bank account.
Keep in mind: If your bank account is your primary billing method, you’ll still need to keep a backup method (like a credit card or PayPal) on file.
How do I add a billing method as a client?
- Go to Account Settings > Billing & Payments
- Choose the Add a billing method button
Can I add more than one billing method?
Yes! You can:
- Add multiple billing methods
- Choose one as your primary
- Keep others as backups
- Assign different billing methods to different teams, if needed
Pro Tip: Adding more than one billing method may help avoid account disruption in case a transaction fails or your card expires.
