Before engaging a freelancer or agency, you’ll need to add a billing method to your account. There are three types of billing methods available to clients.

Credit Card

Upwork accepts Visa, Discover, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, and Diners Club International, as well as prepaid cards. To learn more about adding a credit card to your account, click here.

Note: If you are paying both domestic and international freelancers with a Visa card in the same billing period you will see “split payments” on your invoices (i.e. one transaction for payments to domestic freelancers, and one transaction for payments to international freelancers). This only means that your payment has been split; we are not applying any additional costs.

Clients with a verified PayPal account have the ability to use PayPal as their billing method. To learn more about verifying and linking your PayPal account, click here.

Bank Account (ACH)

Qualifying clients in the U.S. may use their bank account as a billing method. To learn more about qualifying for this billing method, click here.

To add a billing method

  1. Go to Settings   Billing Methods
  2. Click the "Add a New Billing Method" button

Tip: Adding more than one billing method may help avoid account disruption in case a transaction fails.
