This article explains the billing methods you can use on Upwork, with links to details about setting up each one — credit cards, PayPal, Venmo, or a U.S. bank account. You’ll set a primary method, with backups recommended or required. Multiple billing methods can be assigned across different teams. - AI helped create this summary
One of the first steps to working with talent through Upwork is choosing a billing method for your account. To make this easier, we offer multiple options.
You can add more than one billing method, set one as primary, and keep the others as backups. You can also assign different primary billing methods across different teams.
Credit card
We accept Visa, Discover, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, and Diners Club International, as well as prepaid cards. To learn more about adding a credit card to your account, go here.
Note:
If you are paying both domestic and international freelancers with a Visa card in the same billing period you will see “split payments” on your invoices (i.e. one transaction for payments to domestic freelancers, and one transaction for payments to international freelancers). This only means that your payment has been split; we are not applying any additional costs.
PayPal
If you have a PayPal account, you can use PayPal as your billing method. To learn more about linking your PayPal account, go here.
Venmo
If you have a verified Venmo account, you can use Venmo as your billing method. To learn more about verifying and linking your Venmo account, go here.
Bank account (ACH)
If you live in the U.S and have a qualifying Upwork billing history, you may be able to use your bank account as your billing method. If your bank account is your primary billing method, you may need to also have at least one additional, active billing method (payment card or PayPal) at all times. This makes sure your work isn’t interrupted.
To add a billing method
- Go to Account Settings > Billing & Payments
- Choose the Add a billing method button
Pro Tip:
Adding more than one billing method may help avoid account disruption in case a transaction fails or your card expires.
