Your full verified name is not shown to everyone. However, when you agree to enter into a contract with a client, we do share your verified name with that client at that time.
Your full, verified name (the one on your government-issued ID) will need to match withdrawal method, tax information, and tax forms.
It will appear in three locations that are visible to your clients:
- On your invoices for the client
- In the contract room you share with the client
- On your Certificate of Earnings
Knowing for certain that you are who you say you are helps build trust and confidence with your clients. It also helps keep our marketplace safe and secure. And it helps you develop a professional relationship with the client, just as you would if you were working together in person.
Note:
We understand the importance of respecting your identity. Upwork will make exceptions for transgender individuals who are in the process of transitioning but have not been able to obtain a name change due to legal or other barriers. To safeguard the security of our users, documentation may be required.
We understand that freelancers sometimes like to promote their services under a variation of their verified name. However, we also know that in order for Upwork to be a great site for you and other freelancers our marketplace needs to be a place that clients trust. We build this trust in part by indicating that we’ve confirmed your identity and sharing your verified name with them (when you work with them). Note: Your verified name will only appear in the contract room and on invoices.

We understand that your privacy is important to you and that sharing your full, legal name may feel awkward. However, legally, when entering into a contract with someone you are expected to share your legal name. So while your Upwork profile name may be different from your legal name, your legal name will appear on invoices and in the Contract Rooms you have with clients.

You still have options for the name that you use for public and promotional purposes. Your verified name is only shared on invoices and the Contract Room you have with a client.
Your profile name can be a nickname or a variation of your legal name, as long as it follows our name change guidelines.
