How to convert a contract to move outside of Upwork

Learn what it means to convert a contract on Upwork, how to start the process, and what changes once you move work off the platform.

What does it mean to convert a contract on Upwork?

Converting a contract on Upwork means you and your client/freelancer have agreed to continue your working relationship outside of Upwork — and have followed the required steps to make that transition compliant with our Terms of Service.

Is there a fee to convert a contract on Upwork?

Yes, a fee applies. Learn more here.

Note: The Conversion Fee must be paid before making any payments outside of Upwork. The fee is paid once for each specific freelancer/client relationship. Taking a relationship outside of Upwork without first paying the Conversion Fee is a direct violation of the Upwork Terms of Service.

How do I convert a contract on Upwork?

Clients initiate the conversion process. If you're a client:

  1. Go to Manage work > All Contracts and find the contract
  2. Select See contract on the contract you want to convert
  3. From within the contract, select the (…) menu
  4. Select Hire talent full time to start the conversion process. Even if you’re keeping an independent contractor or other type of work classification, you’ll still choose this option to convert your contract off Upwork
  5. Follow the steps outlined and send the conversion request. The freelancer will be notified and must accept the request. We’ll then process the payment and notify you when the conversion process is complete

What happens after a contract is converted on Upwork?

What changes:

  • You’re now free to continue working together outside of Upwork without breaking our Terms of Service
  • You can no longer use Upwork for contract-related billing and our payment protection no longer applies to the contract, among other things

What stays the same:

  • The contract remains part of both the client’s and freelancer’s work history and profile
  • Funds still count toward client spend and freelancer earnings on Upwork
  • Conversion has no impact on Job Success Score (JSS)
  • Clients and freelancers can still leave feedback for each other

Converting a contract doesn’t erase the work or its impact — it simply reflects a new arrangement going forward.

Why don’t I see an option to "hire talent full time"?

You might not see the option if:

  • The contract is more than two years old. In this case, the convert option may not appear in the contract workroom or the (...) menu on your dashboard. Please contact us for help

  • You’re not viewing the correct company or team. Only the company that originally engaged the freelancer can request a conversion. If you have access to multiple accounts, double-check that you’ve selected the right one
