Hire without a job post

In this article, you'll learn how to hire a freelancer on Upwork without creating a job post. You can send offers directly from a freelancer’s profile, rehire past freelancers, or use Direct Messages if eligible. Some users can generate offer terms with Uma, Upwork’s AI, by entering details and reviewing AI-suggested terms before finalizing the offer. - AI helped create this summary

Note: Generating your offer with assistance from Uma, Upwork’s Mindful AI, is being tested and is not available to everyone yet.

If you know which freelancer you want to hire, you can send an offer without creating a job post. The freelancer will see your offer in their messages.

How to send the offer

  • To rehire a past freelancer or agency: Select the Rehire button on their profile to create and send the offer.
  • To hire a new freelancer: Open the freelancer’s profile and select Hire to create and send the offer.
  • To send an offer in messages: If you’re eligible to send Direct Messages to freelancers you haven’t worked with before, you can create and send offers to them by selecting Hire now in the sidebar of a conversation.

Generate an offer with AI

If you have the option to generate offer term suggestions with AI, you’ll see that option near the top of the offer page.

  1. From the offer page, select the Get offer suggestions from AI button
  2. Enter a sentence or two about the work and your budget and select Get suggestions
  3. Review the AI suggestions and apply them to your offer
  4. Edit the suggestions as needed. AI-generated suggestions will be marked with a blue dot next to each section, which disappears once you make your own edits
