Note:

Upwork Now is currently being tested with a limited group of clients. If you don't see this feature on your account, it isn't available to you yet.

Upwork Now collapses the typical hiring timeline into minutes. Post a job with the “Hire Now” toggle enabled, get instant access to active freelancers, review applications, and hire someone within your countdown window. Work starts the same day.

How Upwork Now works

When you post an Upwork Now job, you get a countdown timer to make your hire (starting at 60 minutes) and access to freelancers who've enabled their Work Now availability. Uma, Upwork’s AI work agent, automatically invites top-fit freelancers to review your job. Applications come in real-time from freelancers in the Upwork Now pool. You can also manually invite other active freelancers from the pool. You review applications, send offers, and hire quickly.

If you don't hire within the timer window, the job automatically converts to a standard Upwork job available to all freelancers and stays live until you close it.

Getting started with Upwork Now

  1. Log in to your Upwork account and create a job post as usual.
  2. Enable Hire Now mode by toggling the "Hire Now" option on the job posting form.
  3. Review the Upwork Now modal. You'll see information about how Upwork Now works. Agree to the terms and proceed.
  4. Post the job. Your timer starts (60 minutes by default). You'll see the countdown in your Proposal Manager.
  5. Uma invites freelancers. Uma selects and invites top-fit freelancers from the active Upwork Now pool to apply to your job.
  6. Review applications in real-time. Go to All job posts from your dashboard and select a job post to see the applications populate from freelancers invited by Uma and from the Upwork Now job feed. Review their profiles and any messages they include with their applications.
  7. Send an offer. Select a freelancer whose profile and proposal align with your needs. Send them an offer with the agreed scope, rate, and timeline.
  8. Freelancer accepts. They review and accept your offer. The contract starts immediately.
  9. Auto-conversion. If your timer expires without a hire, the job automatically converts to a standard Upwork job and stays live on the marketplace.

Best practices for Upwork Now

  • Write a clear, specific job description. Clarity attracts better-fit applicants and helps Uma invite the right freelancers. Include what the work is, deliverables, timeline, and budget.
  • Have a clear rate in mind. Know your budget before posting. When you send an offer, include a rate that's fair for the scope and timeline.
  • Review profiles carefully. Even with a tight timeline, take a moment to check recent ratings, portfolio work, and relevant experience. Upwork Now is fast, but you still want to hire quality talent.
  • Send offers quickly. Once you've selected a freelancer, send an offer promptly. The faster you move, the more likely they'll accept before their session ends or they accept another job.
  • Be clear about same-day start. In your job description and offer, be explicit that the freelancer should start work the same day and when (immediately, end of day, etc.).
  • Have payment ready. Fund your escrow or confirm your payment method before posting. Don't let payment logistics delay hiring.
  • Set clear expectations on scope and timeline. Be specific about what you need, deliverables, and deadlines. This helps freelancers make a confident decision to accept your offer.

Frequently asked questions

How is Upwork Now different from regular job posting?

Upwork Now gives you access to freelancers actively available right now and creates urgency with the countdown timer. Regular job posts may reach a broader freelancer audience, but don’t necessarily prioritize timeliness. Use Upwork Now when you need someone immediately; use regular posting when you have more flexibility.

Is Upwork Now available for all to all clients?

Upwork Now is currently in beta and available only to a limited set of clients and freelancers.

Additionally, we don't guarantee that your job will be filled. If there aren't available or interested freelancers in the Upwork Now pool for your specific needs at the time you post, you may not receive applications. If this happens, your job will automatically convert to a standard Upwork job where you can reach a broader audience. We're continuously working to expand our freelancer availability to make same-day hiring as reliable as possible.

How much time do I have to hire?

You start with a 60-minute timer. You can extend by 10 minutes at a time (up to 60 minutes on the clock at once). If the timer expires, the job automatically converts to a standard Upwork job and stays live indefinitely.

Can I extend my Upwork Now timer multiple times?

Yes. You can add time in 10-minute increments. There's no strict limit on how many times you can extend, but the maximum time on the clock at once is 60 minutes.

What happens when my timer expires?

The job automatically converts to a standard Upwork job. All existing applications and offers remain active. You can continue reviewing candidates and hiring normally if you choose.

What does Uma do?

Uma is Upwork's AI work agent. When you post an Upwork Now job, Uma automatically invites 3-5 of the best-fit available freelancers from the Upwork Now pool. This jumpstarts your candidate pool with relevant, active freelancers. Freelancers outside Uma's invites can also see and apply to your job in the Upwork Now feed.

Can I hire a freelancer who wasn't invited by Uma?

Yes. Freelancers in the pool can browse the job feed and apply directly, even if they weren't invited by Uma. You can hire any applicant you choose, invited or not.

How many applications can I expect?

It depends on your job type, skills required, and rate. Uma will source and invite a handful of top freelancers to apply to your job. Additional applications may come from available freelancers browsing the Upwork Now job feed. Popular jobs attract more applications quickly.

What if I don't get any applications?

Availability in the Upwork Now pool varies by job type and time of day, and we're actively expanding it across more work categories. If applications are slow, try extending your timer, clarifying your job description, or adjusting your rate to be more competitive. If you still don’t receive any applications, your job will automatically convert to a standard Upwork listing, giving you access to a broader freelancer audience.

Can I message freelancers after they apply?

Yes. You can message applicants through Upwork's messaging system to clarify scope, confirm availability, or discuss details before sending an offer.

Can I hire multiple freelancers for one Upwork Now job?

Yes. Keep the job open after your first hire and extend the timer to send more offers for each additional freelancer.

What if I want to hire someone quickly but prefer more time to review candidates?

Extend your timer as needed. You don't have to rush. It's better to take time to find the right freelancer than to hire quickly and regret it.

Can I still use regular job posting after Upwork Now?

Yes. Upwork Now and regular job posting are separate posting options. Use whichever fits your timeline and needs.

What if a freelancer accepts my offer but doesn't start work?

Contact the freelancer immediately through Upwork messaging. Confirm they're still available and ready to start. If they don't respond or can't deliver, you may need to cancel and hire someone else. Freelancers are expected to start work same-day on Upwork Now jobs.
