What is a direct offer from a client on Upwork?
A direct offer is when a client sends you a job offer without posting a public job. They’ve likely found your profile or worked with you before and want to hire you for a specific project, no proposal required.
How will I know if I receive a direct offer?
You’ll get a notification in your Upwork account and by email (unless you’ve turned those off). The offer will also appear in your "Offers" tab under "My Jobs."
Can I negotiate the terms of a direct offer?
Absolutely. Just like any contract on Upwork, you can message the client to discuss scope, rates, deadlines, or any other details before accepting. You can also request changes.
What should I do if I receive a direct offer from someone I don’t recognize?
Take a moment to review the client’s profile and project details. If anything seems unclear or suspicious, feel free to ask questions, or report the offer if needed. You’re in control of who you work with. Get tips for staying safe on Upwork.
Can I decline a direct offer?
Yes. If it’s not the right fit, you can decline. You’re under no obligation to accept a direct offer.
How do I respond to a direct offer?
- Go to Messages and choose the conversation related to your direct offer
- Select View offer
- Review the details and select Accept offer, Request changes, or Decline offer
How is a direct offer different from an invitation to apply?
An invitation to apply asks you to submit a proposal for a posted job. A direct offer skips that step — the client already wants to hire you. All you need to do is review the contract details and decide if you’d like to accept.
Will direct offers affect my Job Success Score (JSS)?
Direct offers are like any contract and when closed, your client will have the opportunity to leave you feedback, which is considered when calculating your JSS.
How do direct offers work for agencies?
When a client sends a direct offer to an agency, it goes to the agency owner (the person who manages the agency account). It’s the owner’s responsibility to review and manage incoming offers.
