What’s the request changes option on offers?

When you choose Request changes on an offer, you can suggest edits to important terms like rate, timeline, or scope.

Clients can accept your changes, decline them, or suggest something different — so it’s a back-and-forth process that helps you both stay aligned. The original offer stays visible, making it easy to track updates and keep communication clear.

What can I request to change on an offer and when?

Availability

  • You can request changes on fixed-price or hourly contracts with Marketplace or Business Plus clients — not on Enterprise, Payroll, or Direct Contracts offers
  • Freelancers working independently or agency managers can request offer changes — agency freelancers won’t see this option

Editable terms

  • Project type: You can request hourly or fixed-price
  • Payment amounts: For hourly contracts, you can enter an hourly rate, and for fixed-price contracts, you can enter an amount
  • Payment schedule for fixed-price contracts: You can ask for payment to be made all at once at the end of the contract or broken into milestones
  • Other payment details: You can request scheduled rate increases or additional automatic weekly payments
  • Scope of work: You can request edits to the job description
  • Other contract details: You can request changes to the start date, contract or milestone due dates, the hourly limit on hours worked each week, and whether you can enter time manually
  • Attachments: You can add attachments to the offer but cannot delete the client’s attachments

Timing and limits

  • 7-day offer period: Offers remain active and available for requested changes for seven days, but the timer resets each time a client sends a revised offer. Freelancer requests do not reset the window
  • One-hour limits: You can send up to three requests within a one-hour window
  • Concurrent activity: You may not be able to make changes if the client is currently active in the offer, to help prevent overlapping requests and miscommunications

How do I request changes on an offer?

  1. Navigate to the offer
  2. Select Request Changes to open the editing page
  3. Adjust the terms as needed, such as payment details, start date, or scope of work
  4. Add a brief message explaining your proposed changes to the client (optional)
  5. Choose Send to client to submit your request

What happens after I submit change requests on an offer?

The client may:

  • Approve: They can approve your requested changes, which sends a new version of the offer
  • Reject: They may reject your changes but leave the original offer active
  • Make a modified offer: They can make their own changes or build on your suggestions and resend the offer
  • Withdrawal: They can withdraw the offer

When the client responds, you'll get an automated message and a bell notification. You may also receive an email if you have email notifications enabled.

You can:

  • Make more requests: You can submit additional requests if necessary, up to three in a one-hour period
  • Accept or decline an offer: You can accept or decline the most recent offer. You can still accept or decline the original offer after submitting a request for changes until the client sends a modified offer, as long as the job remains open

How do I view past offer versions and requested changes?

  1. Go to the offer’s details page
  2. Select View offer or Respond to offer to see dropdown selections for the offer versions and the requested changes history

How many times can I request changes to terms?

You can request changes as many times as you need to reach alignment with the client, but you can only send three change requests per hour. You can also only send requests for changes on active offers; offers expire after seven days of inaction from the client.

Do all versions of the offer remain available as choices during the negotiation process?

No. During the negotiation process, you can accept the client’s most recent offer. Other offers will not remain open when new ones are sent.

I’m negotiating contract terms through the request changes feature, but the platform wouldn’t let me send my last request — why not?

You can send up to three requests per hour. If you're trying to send more than that, you’ll need to wait to send the next request. You also can’t send another request while the client is currently actively working on the offer, to help prevent overlapping requests and communications. The best option is to check back later.
