When a client sends you an offer, it’s an exciting moment — but it’s not always the final step. If you’d like to see some adjustments to the offer terms before accepting, you can request changes. Here’s how the process works and what to expect.
What is the request changes option?
Choosing Request changes on an offer lets you suggest edits to key offer terms, creating a flexible negotiation process. Clients can accept or reject your requested changes, or make further modifications to it. The feature helps ensure clear communication and an efficient workflow while maintaining the original offer terms as a baseline throughout the process.
What you can request and when
Editable terms
You can propose changes to select offer terms, ensuring clarity and alignment on the project scope and payment details. This includes the following items:
- Project type: You can request that the job be hourly or fixed-price
- Payment amounts: For hourly contracts, you can enter an hourly rate, and for fixed-price contracts you can enter an amount
- Payment schedule for fixed-price contracts: You can ask for the payment to be made all at once at the end of the fixed-price contract or broken into milestones
- Other payment details: You can request scheduled rate increases or additional automatic weekly payments
- Scope of work: You can request edits to the job description
- Other contract details: You can request changes to the start date, contract or milestone due dates, the hourly limit on hours worked each week, and whether you can enter time manually
- Attachments: You can add attachments to the offer, but you cannot delete the client’s attachments
Timing
- 7-day offer period: Offers remain active and available for requested changes for seven days, but the timer resets each time a client sends a revised offer
- One-hour limits: You can only send three requests within a one-hour window
- Concurrent activity: You may not be able to make changes if the client is currently active in the offer, to help prevent overlapping requests and miscommunications
How to request changes on an offer
Follow these steps to request changes to an offer:
- Navigate to the offer and select Request Changes to open the editing page
- Adjust the terms as needed, such as payment details, start date, or scope of work
- You can provide a brief message explaining your proposed changes to the client if you want
- Choose Send to client to submit your request
What happens next
Once you’ve submitted your changes, the client may respond in several ways:
- Approval: They can approve your requested changes, sending a new version of the offer for your review and acceptance
- Rejection: They may reject your changes but leave the original offer active
- Modified offer: They can make their own changes to the offer that are either separate from your requests or that build on or compromise with your proposed changes and resend it for your consideration
- Withdrawal: They can withdraw the offer
We’ll notify you when the client responds through an automated message and a bell notification. You may also receive an email if you have email notifications enabled.
You also have options throughout the negotiation process:
- Further requests: You can submit additional requests if necessary, up to three in a one-hour period
- Accepting an offer: You can still accept or decline the original offer after submitting a request for changes until the client sends a modified offer, as long as the job remains open. You can also accept or decline modified offers from the client
View past offer versions and requested changes
You can view all the versions of an offer and your history of requested changes from the offer’s details page. When you choose View offer or Respond to offer, you’ll see drop-down selections for the offer versions and for the requested changes history.
Pro tips for successful negotiations
- Stay professional: Approach the negotiation with a collaborative mindset to build trust and rapport
- Communicate clearly: Clearly outline your reasons for requesting changes to help the client understand your perspective. Be specific and provide concise, relevant context for your request

Yes, as long as the original offer has not expired or been withdrawn by the client, you can accept it at any time even if you have made change requests. You can also propose separate changes if you want to continue negotiating with the client. (Offers expire in seven days.)
You can request changes as many times as you need to reach alignment with the client, but you can only send three change requests per hour. You can also only send requests for changes on active offers; offers expire after seven days of inaction from the client.
During the negotiation process, you can accept the client’s most recent offer. Other offers will not remain open when new ones are sent. To choose the offer you want to accept, go to the offer history, review the offers, and select the one you want.
You can send up to three requests per hour. If you are trying to send more than that in a one-hour period, you’ll need to wait to send the next request. You also can’t send another request while the client is currently actively working on the offer, to help prevent overlapping requests and communications. The best option is to check back later.
