Clients who are members of Upwork Plus, Upwork Business, and Upwork Enterprise can choose to reach out to new talent with Direct Messages.

What are Direct Messages?

Direct Messages allow clients to reach out directly to a limited number of freelancers with whom they haven’t interacted on previous contracts.

These messages provide a way to learn more about a freelancer’s availability, expertise, or rate details before sending a job invite. It’s also a way to discuss a project that may not have been posted yet.

Send a Direct Message

Reach out to new freelancers in three steps.

  1. Search for freelancers with the roles or skills your project needs.

  2. Choose the message button, either directly from search or the freelancer’s profile.

  3. Compose your message. Freelancers often request details about how their skills can support your project, or why you think they’d  be a good match.

NOTE

If you need to contact many freelancers about the same project, it’s faster to post a job and invite freelancers to submit proposals.

Is a freelancer required to respond?

No, it’s always their choice to respond. Replies do not affect their responsiveness or Job Success Score. However, replies within 24 hours lead to faster hiring times.

How can a freelancer learn more about a client?

Additional client information is included in the first Direct Message notification email that is sent to freelancers when a Direct Message conversation is initiated.

How do I start work?

Clients can send an offer by selecting Hire Now at the top of their conversation in Messages.

I received an unwanted or spam message. What should I do?

Freelancers can archive a conversation if they are not interested in receiving messages from a particular client. Additionally, freelancers can block a client by selecting the extended menu (3 dots) in the Messages room with that client, and selecting block.

Note: When you block a client, you will not be able to receive invites from them in the future unless you unblock them.

  1. Go to the message and hover over it.
