How to use Uma, Upwork’s Mindful AI™, to search for freelancers

Learn how to use Uma to search for freelancers. Discover how it refines results, suggests filters, and guides you in real time.

Note: We are testing out using Uma, Upwork’s Mindful AI™, to help generate search results when you search for freelancers. It is currently being tested with a limited group of clients. If you're part of the test, you'll see the experience automatically in your search results.


How does Uma help me find freelancers on Upwork?

As part of this test, Uma is embedded directly in your search experience. Think of it as a helpful copilot that understands what you’re trying to achieve and guides you as you search for the perfect fit for your hiring needs.

When you enter a search query (like “mobile app developer for a hotel booking app”), Uma helps not only understanding these queries but also by:
 

  • By refining your results with smart filters. Instead of manually adjusting filters, Uma suggests ones that match your specific goals
  • By understanding your intent and adapting in real time. Uma helps you express what you’re looking for in your own words. It responds with context-aware suggestions that make it easier to move forward — whether you're hiring for a niche skill or exploring how Upwork works.
  • Surfacing a list of freelancers with the skills you need. Based on your query, Uma will create a list of candidates for you to consider.
     
Note: You can always type in your own custom filter to further refine your search results, e.g. “Make sure they have great communication skills”


What are the “AI insights” I see about the freelancer?

AI insights on search results give you quick, trustworthy AI-generated summaries showing why a freelancer is a strong match, based on  their description, skills, work history and client feedback.

They help you understand relevance at a glance, so you can find the right talent faster and make confident hiring decisions.


Where are my regular search filters?

They’re all still there in the filter pane, which you can open by selecting the funnel icon in the sidebar.


How do I view my past searches and conversations?

You can click on the conversation history icon on the sidepane and you can view all your past searches and conversations. We store conversations for 30 days.


How can I share feedback about Uma and the search results it provides?

Your feedback is super valuable to us. You can share it in three places:

  • By choosing Share feedback within Uma's results
  • By giving Uma's results a thumbs-up or thumbs-down
  • By adding your feedback about the AI Insights that appear in the Skills section you see on a freelancer’s profile in search results


Can I opt out of this test?

During this test, switching back — or removing Uma, Upwork’s Mindful AI™ — isn’t possible. But your feedback helps shape what comes next.
