What are Upwork Skill Certifications?
Upwork Skill Certifications are legacy credentials that appear on some freelancer profiles. These certifications were awarded through a rigorous, invitation-only assessment process and focused on skills in Web, Mobile & Software Development and Customer Service.
While we no longer offer new certifications, the ones previously earned remain valid and visible. They’re a signal that the freelancer demonstrated proven skills in a specific area.
Keep in mind — certifications are one helpful indicator, but we still recommend reviewing proposals, conducting interviews, and having conversations to make sure a freelancer is the right fit for your project.
What did the freelancer have to complete to earn a certification from Upwork?
In web, mobile and software development
These certifications tested a freelancer’s technical abilities in a specific language or development stack through a two-part assessment:
- Part 1: A proctored coding test with language-agnostic algorithm challenges to assess problem-solving
- Part 2: A timed test specific to a particular language or technology (e.g. Java, Swift, or JavaScript)
