Learn about Upwork’s Talent Accelerator program

Talent Accelerator is a new pilot program for freelancers who are new to Upwork but not new to their field. It's the first step toward a clearer path for proving your skills and earning client trust — even without Upwork history or client reviews yet.

Who can access Talent Accelerator?

Right now, Talent Accelerator is available to a limited group of new freelancers.

We look at a combination of factors, such as:

  • Your skills and experience
  • Demand for your skill area
  • Signals that suggest you’re ready to complete a job successfully

Not all new freelancers will see this experience during the initial rollout.

How does Talent Accelerator work?

If you’re eligible, you may be invited to participate shortly after joining Upwork.

Here’s what the experience looks like:

  • You’re invited to a private opportunity posted by Upwork, based on your skills
  • You complete a short, fixed-price project managed by Upwork
  • Your work is evaluated using a standardized review process
  • If successful, you receive:
    • Payment for the project
    • Feedback and a rating on your profile
    • Improved visibility to help you win future jobs

This gives you real work history on Upwork, which can make it easier to stand out to clients.

Can freelancers already on Upwork join Talent Accelerator?

Not at this time. Talent Accelerator is for freelancers who are new to the platform only, and do not yet have Upwork work history.

What makes Talent Accelerator jobs different from regular jobs?

They are designed to remove some of the common barriers new freelancers face.

Here’s how they’re different:

  • No need to compete in the open marketplace to get started, the jobs are Upwork-managed
  • No Connects required to access Talent Accelerator opportunities
  • Work is curated and structured to be clear and achievable
  • Evaluation is based on your actual work, not your profile

What do I earn by completing a Talent Accelerator job?

Talent Accelerator jobs are paid projects and payment is processed through Upwork, just like other contracts.

  • You’ll receive a fixed payment for completing the work
  • Additional rewards may be available based on the quality of your submission

You can also receive additional benefits based on the rating you earn:

  • For five stars, you’ll receive six months of free Freelancer Plus and 500 Connects (a nearly $200 value).
  • For four stars, you’ll receive three months of free Freelancer Plus and 200 Connects, (a nearly $90 value)
  • For three stars or below, you won’t receive additional benefits.

How is my work on a Talent Accelerator job evaluated?

Your submission is reviewed using a consistent evaluation process.

  • Reviews may include both human evaluation and AI-assisted checks
  • The focus is on the quality of your final deliverable
  • If your work meets the required standard, you’ll receive a rating and feedback

This feedback becomes part of your Upwork work history.

Who does the evaluation? What is being evaluated in the Talent Accelerator program?

Upwork works with subject-matter experts with job-relevant experience to evaluate work through a human-led process. As with any client engagement, the quality of your work and overall approach to the job can influence proposal decisions and final reviews. Our goal is to assess demonstrated performance and create a credible proof signal that can help you build trust with future clients.

  • Proposal stage - Your responses to interview questions and other application materials are reviewed for fit, relevance, and readiness for the job.
  • Project stage - Your submitted work will be evaluated against the criteria shared in the job description and a defined rubric. This includes the quality of your deliverables, whether they meet the requirements, and how well you followed the instructions and timeline.

What can I earn by completing a Talent Accelerator job?

By completing a job, you earn your first review, start building work history, and show clients proof of your skills and project performance.

What if my work doesn’t meet expectations, can I get a poor review for a Talent Accelerator job?

Yes. Talent Accelerator jobs are real jobs, with defined requirements and quality expectations. Just like if you were working with a client, if the terms are not met, the review you receive will reflect your performance.

What if I’m not interested in this particular job or it’s not actually relevant to my experience?

Simply decline the invite. It's best to apply only if the job is a real fit for your skills and experience. Declining the invite will not affect your Upwork account in any way.

Do I need to use Connects to participate the Talent Accelerator program?

No. If you’re invited to a Talent Accelerator job, you won’t need Connects to access that opportunity.

You’ll still need Connects to apply to other jobs in the marketplace.

Can I apply to multiple Talent Accelerator jobs?

You’ll typically be guided through a single job experience, but we may add more opportunities in the future.

Will clients know a job was a Talent Accelerator job?

Yes. The completed job appears as work history on your profile. Clients will see the job was part of the Upwork Talent Accelerator program as well as Upwork’s review, rating, and the job’s associated skills.

Does Talent Accelerator replace applying to jobs?

No, this is a starting point for some freelancers. Once you complete a Talent Accelerator job, you’ll continue using Upwork normally — submitting proposals, working with clients, and building your reputation.
