What is Uma Recruiter?
Uma Recruiter is an AI-powered feature that helps clients find freelancers for their jobs. It uses information from the client's job and freelancer profiles to identify freelancers whose skills may be a match and can invite them to apply.
If Uma Recruiter invites you to a job, you can review the opportunity and decide whether you want to submit a proposal. An invitation doesn't guarantee that the client will interview or hire you.
How Uma Recruiter works
Clients use Uma Recruiter to help find freelancers for their jobs. Uma searches for potential matches and identifies freelancers who may have relevant skills.
If you're identified as a potential match, you’ll receive an invitation to apply to the job. You’ll find these invitations with your other job invitations on Upwork. Any from Uma Recruiter will have an alert at the top of the invite stating the client is using Uma Recruiter to help them find talent.
After applying, you won't see a new message room open right away. A message room will only be created if the client decides to send you a message directly. If they do, you’ll receive a message from them within your Upwork Messages.
What happens after Uma Recruiter invites you?
An invitation from Uma Recruiter gives you the opportunity to submit a proposal for the job. Review the job details and decide whether the opportunity is right for you.
If you apply, the client can review your proposal along with other proposals they receive. If the client decides to respond to your proposal, you’ll be added into a message room with them. Once they message you, you can communicate with them through Upwork as usual.

Did the client personally invite me?
Not necessarily. The client is using Uma Recruiter to help find talent, and Uma Recruiter may invite freelancers who are identified as potential matches.
An invitation from Uma Recruiter doesn't necessarily mean the client personally reviewed your profile before you received the invitation.
How can I tell if Uma Recruiter invited me?
Uma Recruiter invitations appear with your other job invitations on Upwork.
You’ll see a message when you view the invitation explaining that the client is using Uma Recruiter to help find talent.
Do I have to apply if Uma Recruiter invites me?
No. Review the job details and decide whether the opportunity is a good fit for you.
Does an invitation mean the client wants to hire me?
No. An invitation means Uma Recruiter identified you as a potential match and invited you to apply. It doesn't guarantee an interview, response, or hire.
What happens after I submit a proposal?
The client can review your proposal and decide whether they want to continue the conversation.
If they’d like to talk with you more about the job, they’ll message you and you’ll be added to a message room with them. You’ll be able to communicate with them through Upwork Messages.
Why don't I see a message room after applying?
Uma Recruiter invitations won't automatically open a message room when you submit your proposal. If the client decides to contact you, a message room will be created and you can communicate with the client there.
