Why do I need to verify my identity as a client on Upwork?

Identity verification helps create a trusted environment for everyone on Upwork. By confirming who you are, we’re able to reduce fraud, protect the integrity of the marketplace, and give freelancers the confidence they need to engage with your projects. The process is quick, secure, and designed to keep the platform safe for all users. Note: We also ask freelancers to verify their identity.

How do I verify my identity as a client?

We’ll notify you directly when it’s time to verify — or re-verify — your identity. You’ll get an email from us, and you may also see a prompt when you sign in to your Upwork account. In some cases, you may be asked to complete just one step; in others, you may need to complete multiple steps.

Once notified, you’ll have seven days to complete verification. If not completed within that window, your account may be placed on hold until you are able to successfully complete the process.

What information do I need to share with Upwork to verify my identity as a client?

We may ask you for:

  • Your government ID. Learn what we accept and more here
  • A selfie or to meet with us on video. Learn about visual verification here
  • Your phone number. See the numbers we accept and troubleshooting tips here
  • Confirmation of your location. Learn more here

Where can I see what's needed to complete the verification process?

Once the requirement to verify your identity has been sent:

  • Go to Account Settings (desktop) or Settings (mobile app) > Identity Verification to see where you're at in the process

What happens if I don't verify my identity as a client?

If you've received a notification that verifying your identity is required and you're unable to do so or choose not to, you may not be able to continue working through Upwork. That means you can't post a job, message, or work with freelancers.

Important: Deliberately uploading falsified documentation is a crime and violators will be permanently suspended. Upwork may report users who attempt to send fake or falsified documents.

How do you protect my personal information?

We take the protection of your personal information seriously. Access to your information is strictly governed by Upwork's Privacy Policy. We do not sell any of the information you submit to us, and after 30 days, the images you submit to verify your identity are deleted.
