What to do if you see a charge from Upwork and don't recognize it

Learn what to do if you are a client and see an unrecognized charge from Upwork.

What should I do if I see a charge from Upwork that I don't recognize?

Review your Upwork transaction history

Go to Reports > Transaction history to see your Upwork transactions. Select a row to see the itemized charges for that transaction

Good to know:

  • We display your transaction history in U.S. Dollars. Currency conversion rates and fees may cause variation in the amounts.
  • Credit card charges will include an ID number in the format “UPWORK-xxxxxxxxxREF”.

    • The xxxxxxxxx represents the Upwork reference ID (shown in the CSV report in your transaction history).
    • The letters after the number indicate the transaction type. Billing for freelancer’s work is labeled REF with an ID to match the debit transaction on your account, which you can see referenced in the CVS report in your transaction history. Other types include Marketplace, Contract Initiation Fee, Membership, MnthFee (Monthly Fee), Connects, and USDVerify (when verifying a credit card via two small charges, the x.xx-x.xxUSD represents the Dollar values to enter).

Review your billing methods

We charge your primary billing method on file. If your primary source fails, we may charge your backup payment source. Make sure you have set your preferred billing method as primary in Settings › Billing & payments. Learn more about how to add, edit, or remove billing methods.

Check for multiple Upwork accounts

If you ever added your credit or debit card to another Upwork client account, the unrecognized charges might be coming from that account. Please repeat all of these steps for every Upwork account. Then for help on combining your accounts (you can control multiple companies from within a single Upwork account):

  1. Go to Account settings (desktop) or Settings (mobile app) > My info
  2. Choose the Transfer ownership button
  3. Enter the name of the new owner and select Begin Transfer. Note: You can only transfer ownership to a company member who has administrator status
  4. We’ll send you an email confirming your request. Choose I agree, if you wish to transfer company ownership

Check to see if any associates have access to your cards or accounts

If anyone else has access to your card or additional cards associated with your credit or debit account, check with them. Someone else could be billing your card.

Change your password

If you suspect your account may have been compromised, please immediately change your password.
