What’s changing in the end-of-contract review?
We’re simplifying the way clients leave feedback for you.
Here’s what’s new:
- Private feedback is no longer requested from your clients and no longer impacts your reputation, including your Job Success Score. Only public feedback remains, and has not changed
- Clients now have the option to leave you a private note that will be visible to you in the contract workroom for future contracts
Why was the private feedback rating removed?
We heard from freelancers and clients that private feedback felt unclear and confusing. Instead of a private rating and review, clients can now leave an optional private note in the contract workroom that only you can see and that does not affect your reputation. This change makes the feedback process clearer, more transparent, and more actionable.
What feedback impacts my Job Success Score now?
Any feedback a client provides at the end of a contract will be considered in your Job Success Score (JSS). In the past, both public and private feedback were included. Since we no longer collect private feedback, only public feedback is considered.
Note: Private notes from clients do not impact your JSS.
What is the private note that clients can send as part of feedback?
A private note is an optional message a client can share directly with you when ending a contract.
- It’s visible only to you (and agency managers, if applicable)
- It does not appear on your public profile
- It does not affect your Job Success Score or reputation in any way
This allows for constructive feedback to be shared directly with you, rather than hidden.
When and where will I see a client’s private note?
You’ll see the private note in the contract workroom, if your client leaves one. It becomes visible when:
- You’ve submitted your own feedback, or
- 14 days have passed since the client left feedback
This matches the current double-blind feedback flow.
Can clients edit their private note?
No. Once submitted, private notes can’t be edited.
Are public reviews changing?
Not at all.
- Public star ratings (1 to 5) stay the same
- Written public feedback stays the same
- Public reviews are displayed on your profile the same way
Where can I see the public feedback clients have left me on Upwork?
As long as the client has paid you at least $1.00 USD and it's ready to be withdrawn*, any feedback they leave will be displayed on your public profile. Here’s how you can see all the feedback you’ve received:
- Go to All contracts and select the title of the contract
- Select the Contract details tab to view feedback
We designed the feedback system to be double-blind. This means that your client cannot see the feedback that you left until after they leave feedback for you, or until the 14-day feedback period expires. At that point, the feedback that you and the client have left for each other will become visible within 24 hours.
*Not sure when your payments are ready to be withdrawn? See this Help article.
Note:
To protect any potentially sensitive information, we do not display contracts with Enterprise clients or their feedback on your public work history. We still take these contracts into consideration when calculating your Job Success Score (JSS).
How do I share feedback I've received from clients on Upwork on other sites?
You can share your client’s feedback in two ways:
- Share the feedback to LinkedIn immediately after you've ended a successful contract. You'll see a pop-up window reminding you of this option
- Go to Your profile, scroll down to Work history, and choose the Share feedback button to share your Upwork feedback on LinkedIn, X, or Facebook
Remember, you must set your profile to public in order to share feedback.
Note:
When sharing your feedback on LinkedIn, Facebook, or X, you may not see your star rating. This is because we only show it in shared feedback if you’ve received the full, five-star rating from your client.
