When work is completed and you no longer need services from someone you’ve hired through Upwork Payroll, you can end the assignment.
You may choose to discuss the end of the assignment with the freelancer before you end it. You’ll also need to give the staffing provider, which is the freelancer’s Employer of Record (EOR), enough time to end the assignment correctly and in compliance with applicable labor laws.
To end a U.S.-based assignment, you’ll typically need to give the EOR 72 hours’ notice. This allows the staffing provider sufficient time to comply with any termination requirements, such as state laws governing final paychecks or legal notices. The notice period for assignments outside the U.S. varies from country to country.
For U.S. offboarding requests, email your request to Upwork Payroll US Offboarding. For international offboarding requests, send your request to Upwork Payroll Intl Offboarding.

Note:
Closing a contract on the Upwork platform does not send a notification to Upwork Payroll. Support requests for Upwork Payroll must be made by email.
Important steps to take after the assignment ends
- Change or revoke any passwords or special access that you gave the freelancer during the contract
- Ensure you’ve received all related work from the freelancer and any work-related materials and equipment of yours that you allowed them to use during the contract. If you let the EOR know, they can assist with supporting the return of materials and equipment
- Remind the freelancer to remove any property of yours that they used or created for you, such as documents, files, or software, from their equipment
- You and your freelancer/agency can leave feedback. It is a double-blind system, which means your freelancer or agency will see the feedback you left them once they have left feedback for you
