Non-compliance Enterprise clients can add or edit future milestones on fixed-price contracts directly, while editing active milestones may require freelancer approval if testing features are available. Compliance accounts must create a new contract for any scope changes, pending a classification review that takes up to three business days.
When you’re ready to give your freelancer more work, you know you’re moving in the right direction. The way you add more work to the contract for your freelancer or edit existing milestones will depend on whether or not you’re an Enterprise Compliance account. Learn more about Enterprise Compliance accounts.
For non-compliance accounts
To add more work for your freelancer on a fixed-price contract, you’ll need to add and activate a milestone. Be sure to discuss the additional work in advance with your freelancer.
To add a milestone:
- Go to View contracts on your dashboard
- Open the contract you wish to update
- Choose the Add new milestone button
- Enter the milestone details and choose Save or Save and add another
To edit or delete future milestones:
You can delete or edit the title, due date, and amount of any future milestones that have not yet been activated and funded.
- Go to View contracts on your dashboard
- Open the contract you want to edit
- From the Overview section, choose Manage milestones
- The button will open a window where you can add, edit, delete, or reorder your milestones — choose the pencil icon to edit the milestone
- To rearrange the milestone list, grab the drag-and-drop toggles on the left of each milestone
- Check your progress with the Show Changes toggle in the window's upper right corner
- Select Save to save your changes
Request changes to an active milestone
Note: This feature is being tested and is not available to everyone yet.
You may be able to request changes to an active milestone — including title, description, due date, and payment amount — as long as the freelancer has not already submitted work for payment. The freelancer can approve or reject the request. To make a request for changes:
- In the contract workroom, select Manage milestones
- Select the edit icon next to the active milestone
- Update the details and select Send for approval
Once you submit the request, you’ll see “Pending change request” in the workroom. You can still edit or withdraw the request until the freelancer responds.
What happens after a change request is submitted on an active milestone?
- If the freelancer rejects the request, the milestone stays the same
- If the freelancer approves, the milestone will automatically update
- If the freelancer submits work OR you release payment on the milestone while the change request is pending, the request is automatically canceled
- If no action is taken, the request expires after seven days
For compliance accounts
To kick off more work with an existing freelancer when you have a compliance account, you’ll create a new contract. You’ll need to do this because any changes or additions to the original scope must go through a classification review, which generally takes 1-3 business days. Please ensure that no work is performed on the new project until the classification review is complete and the freelancer has accepted the offer on the platform. We take this extra precaution to ensure you are protected.
To end the current contract:
- Make final payments to your current milestone, if necessary
- Go to Jobs › All Contracts to find the contract
- Choose the (...) options button and select End contract
- Select End Contract to confirm
To rehire your freelancer or agency on a new contract:
- Choose Talent > My Hires
- Under My Hires, you'll see the talent you've worked with on past projects
- Choose the (...) button next to the talent you want to rehire
- Select the Hire option from the dropdown menu
- Select the contract terms and send an offer

You may also be able to request a change to the due date of an active milestone — this feature is not available to everyone yet. However, if you have a compliance account, you will need to either request a contract extension or start a new contract if the new date is not within the scope of your existing contract.
You cannot change the order of active milestones. However, you can change the order of milestones that you haven’t activated yet. To rearrange the milestone list, grab the drag-and-drop toggles on the left of each milestone.
